Contentment
I recently flew to Missoula, Montana for my daughter’s graduation from photography school and drove back to Southern York County with her. On the way home we visited at a few places of interest, like Devil’s Tower in Wyoming, the Black Hills, and my favorite, the Badlands in South Dakota.

My wife’s Dad died this year from cancer. He was 93 years old. Her Mom passed away last year. She was 87. For the first time in our married lives—and of Lauree’s entire life—New Year’s Eve will not be spent with the extended family gathering around Mom and Dad (just Dad last year) at “the farm” in northwest Pennsylvania. It’s the end of an era, but not an end to their legacy.

Many people, including residents of Southern York County--at least us “older” ones--can remember Flip Wilson, a seventies comedian who was at times hilarious. One of his routines was his rendition of Geraldine, who would explain her indulgences--say an expensive shopping spree--by saying “The devil made me do it.” It was a very funny routine, but of course she was not a real person, and not to be taken seriously.

Today was the fall yard sale in Stewartstown where I live. It is the second of two days that residents may have a yard sale without paying for a permit, the other being in the spring. Since it promised to be a beautiful day I set out on my bike to see what I could see.

I heard about it, but somehow it just seemed so unlikely that I never gave it a thought. But last week when my phone bill arrived, with an amount twice what is normal, I realized I’d been slammed.
