OK, this is intended to be tongue in cheek, but I have to ask…

Is there an umbrella ban in SESD? None of the children I saw waiting for the bus this morning in the rain were using umbrellas. The only thing that I can figure is that since an umbrella is a potential weapon, umbrellas have been banned.

Come to think of it, none of them were wearing raincoats, either. I guess raincoats are not “cool”.

The cool thing must be to get to school soaking wet, then complain all morning about being wet from the rain.

East Hopewell Township will be holding their monthly meeting this evening at the township building on Hickory Road starting at 7PM. The first part of the meeting there is a subdivision plan to be presented and a couple of other business issues. No one has requested to speak at public comment period. :(

If anyone has complaints about the strong stench odor attributed to hog manure produced at the CAFO which was spread in early to mid April, please feel free to attend this meeting and voice your concerns.

It is my understanding that the odor traveled to Hopewell Township [Stewartstown Station] and Stewartstown Borough. I’ve received e-mail messages from Stewartstown Station and was approached by borough residents about the odor.

Once again we will be having the annual S.E.Y.F.A Bull and Oyster Roast. All parents participating in the SEYFA program are responsible for 4 Tickets. The cost of each ticket is $35.00 so the total is $140.00 for all four tickets, you can make a $140.00 donation in lieu of selling the tickets. It is imperative that every ticket is sold or we receive the cash equivalent for each ticket. If in fact we cannot sell all the tickets we will need to raise the cost of registration next year. This is the only fund raiser that SEYFA does. We do not ask you or your children to sell food (i.e. candy, pizzas etc.) like most other organizations do. It keeps the cost of the program down and helps with new equipment, reconditioning of equipment, new practice and game pants as well as new jerseys.

ALL Ticket money is due September 11, 2008 NO EXCEPTIONS, if you lose the tickets you are still responsible for the price of the tickets, if you do not sell them you are also still responsible. S.E.Y.F.A reserves the right to withhold playing time from your child to play until all funds are paid in full.

My son, a 6th grader at SEMS West, came home last week with a slip asking for permission to participate in a squid dissection. I signed the form to allow him to dissect. He came home and told us what happened that day… one of the first things that came out of his mouth was that they got to eat it!!! My first thought… he did not just say that!!! The squid were brought to the school frozen and thawed outside in the sun, the squid were given to the students and their dissection tools consisted of no more than a plastic picnic knife and a paper plate. The squid was cut up and cooked outside, the children were encouraged to eat as much as they wanted. I can understand if they bought some frozen calamari rings at the store and cooked them to let the kids know what it might taste like, but this is totally unacceptable!! Absolutely barbaric!! By the end of the story, I was absolutely livid… still am, if you can’t tell! My husband immediately jumps on the computer to email the principal of the school. It has been 4 days and we have still heard nothing from her. We have had problems with this teacher since the beginning of the school year, but I would have never thought that she would be so unprofessional!

On Monday, June 2, 2008 from 11:00 AM to Noon in the Capitol Rotunda in Harrisburg there will be a school property tax elimination rally in support of House Bill 1275, the School Property Tax Elimination Act, the legislation that is endorsed by the PTCC (PA Taxpayers’ Cyber Coalition) and the 26 PCTA (PA Coalition of Taxpayers Associations) taxpayer groups statewide, one of which is SETRC.

SETRC will be participating. If you would like to join us, please let me know as soon as possible, but no later than May 14th, via a PM. If enough people wish to go, SETRC will charter a bus and pay part of the expense. We are checking on the rates now.

The timing of this rally is meant to coincide with the budget debate that will be in progress then, ensuring that all members of the General Assembly will be in Harrisburg to receive our message.

While the agenda has not yet been finalized, it is expected that a large number of current lawmakers and candidates will be in attendance along with community, business, and school leaders and taxpayer advocates. Following the rally the PTCC and FreedomWorks will be issuing an “Honor Roll” listing all lawmakers, candidates, and community leaders who show their support for school property tax elimination by attending this rally.

The purpose of the rally is to do our best to send a very strong message to the legislature that we are tired of their procrastination and expect action to eliminate school property taxes NOW. This is a major event and a large turnout of supporters will help to focus media attention on this issue and increase public awareness and support.

If you can join us, just send me a PM. I’ll provide more details to those who respond once we have a head count.
