Eureka Bingo volunteers needed!

One of Eureka Volunteer Fire & Ambulance Co.’s ongoing fundraisers is Thursday night Bingo. Volunteers staff the games. Volunteers are normally scheduled to work one Thursday every 4 weeks, unless they want to do more.

Bingo is not held during January and February. We will re-open on March 1st and are getting our teams together now.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the games normally end around 10:00 p.m. We need people to sell bingo cards and ‘pull tab’ tickets, starting at 5:30, callers from 6:45 to 10:00 and people to man the floor, from 6:45 to 10:00. Training is provided. If you can spare 4 1/2 hours one Thursday every 4 weeks, or would like more information, send me a private message.

On a personal note, I volunteer because if I should ever need Eureka’s services, I want them to be there. Remember, all the firefighters are volunteers. The EMS crew is a mix of volunteers and paid staff. Running a fire and ambulance company is an expensive endeavor. To get an idea of what it costs, visit: http://www.eureka54.org/content/donations/

So please consider giving a little of your time. We’d love to have you on our team!

Eureka Fire Donations are Down

Over the past few years, Eureka’s donation drive has had a 38 to 40% response rate. In other words, of all the packages mailed, about 40% sent a donation. This is the package we receive in the US mail asking for donations.

Unfortunately, this year, the response rate was only 29%.

The Fire Co. is 100% volunteer. The funds received from this drive support the day-to-day operations, facility and apparatus (vehicle) maintenance, equipment upgrades, training classes, and so on. Think about what you pay for maintenance on your car, truck or SUV. Now look at a fire engine or brush truck and imagine what the maintenance costs are for that.

If you forgot to mail in your donation, it’s never too late. And every little bit helps.

This is YOUR fire company, please support it!

South Eastern prepping for tough budget year
By LORI BADDERS
For the Daily Record/Sunday News
Updated: 01/08/2012 04:26:38 PM EST

York, PA - The South Eastern School District is facing another difficult budget year.
That was the word from business manager Paula Denton during a financial presentation to the school board Thursday.

Denton called portions of the budget “a big challenge,” including money the district must set aside for the Pennsylvania School Employees’ Retirement System. To meet the state’s requirements, South Eastern must increase its funding to PSERS by 12.36 percent for the 2012-13 school year.

That’s about $800,000, Denton said.

The other challenge is charter school funding. Because the state will no longer reimburse districts for any portion of what they pay toward charter schools, all districts will be left to pay these bills on their own.

In 2003-04, charter schools cost $52,000. By 2010-11, the cost was $909,000. Without state reimbursement, the district is looking at an increase of 1,358 percent for 2012-13, Denton said.

Medical insurance rates also are going up, Supt. Rona Kaufmann said.

When asked about the district’s financial health, she said the district is in fair shape if it has no emergency funding needs.

“We’re not in a tenuous position but it would take only one major thing,” Kauffman said.

Denton said 90 percent of the budget covers items that are fixed, such as contracts, obligations and mandates. These include salaries and benefits, transportation and pension funds.

That leaves just 10 percent over which the school board has control, she said.

Act 537 and Public Sewer

I saw this note (picture attached) posted at the Mason Dixon library in Stewartsown regarding Act 537, which requires townships to come up with a plan for sewage systems.

For those not going on public sewer, it seems that an inspection by your township’s “Sewage Enforcement Officer”, is now required when having the septic tank pumped. And some townships have set up a pumping scheduled to be followed every 4 -5 years and now requires that paperwork be submitted to the township as proof of proper septic maintenance.

Here is Peach Bottom townships FAQ’s regarding implementation of the plan:
http://www.peachbottomtownship.org/files/Sewage/on_lot_management_qa.pdf

If the township-selected inspector discovers a problem that cannot be “easily” remedied, is the homeowner allowed a second opinion or is the township’s word final?

I am not sure if townships have leeway in creating their policy - and apparently the cost of administration is 50% funded by the DEP .. so I wonder where will the other 50% come from? One PA township I found searching online charges a $25 fee to be turned in along with the paperwork to cover the admin costs.

Like the note says, while it’s important that the septic systems are property maintained, do we really need/want yet another “mandatory” inspection program?

Kennard Dale Ski Club?

Does anyone know if Kennard-Dale high school has a ski club?

My son has taken an interest in snowboarding. I have heard from friends that live in Hanover that their high school has a Ski Club that organizes outings (some that include taking middle school students).

Just wondering as that would be great for him. I’m sure I won’t be able to hang with him for too long.

The Citizen’s Advisory Committee of South Eastern School District has been tasked by the School Board to develop a Resource Directory. The Directory will consist of individuals living and/or working in the South Eastern School District who have an area of expertise and would be willing to assist the School Board Committees in various tasks and decision making topics.

The purpose behind compiling a South Eastern Resource Directory is to involve our community in promoting best stewardship of our resources. The Resource Directory will be made available to Board Directors and will be divided into committee sections consisting of:
Buildings and Grounds - facility maintenance and upkeep
Finance - balancing revenue and expenditures
Extra-curricular - activities outside of academics
Transportation - student safety
Other - areas of assistance (examples: fundraising, public relations, etc.)
If you feel that you have an area of strength that could benefit the South Eastern School District Board of Directors in one of the above committee areas and would be willing to contribute to our district
