It’s that time of year again!  For years I have used TurboTax with good results, but since that’s all I’d used recently I really didn’t know if the others were any good or not.  This year I decided to play around with TaxAct to see if I liked it.  Since you can try it free and just pay when you’re ready to file I figured it was worth a spin.  My taxes are not all that complicated, however I do itemize and deal with education expenses and things like that.  I’ve finished entering everything other than one contribution that I need to document and found it quite easy, and the returns look correct.  At only about $17 for both federal & state returns including e-filing it’s very reasonable.

Has anyone had experience beyond TurboTax?  You can talk about TurboTax if you wish as well, but I just happen to be more curious about experiences with some of the alternatives out there.  Others may want to hear about the top seller!

I’ve used Tax Cut for years and have not ever had any problems with it - even when we sold 2 houses and bought another

Ditto on TaxCut for me.  I’ve used it since 2002 or so and love it.

Yes I do really like TurboTax...just wanted to get some idea of other options.  Sounds like most people use either it or TaxCut (no surprise there!).

I use to use Turbotax until they pulled that DRM junk. Since then I use Taxcut. It works fine and they send me the federal version every year for free. No need to buy the state version since we can do it online and there isn’t all that much to PA state returns.

I have used Taxact for the past 4 years.  I have never had a problem with the software.
I use the efile with Taxact.  So, in essecnce the federal was free.  Also, Once you purchase,
you will get an advanced purchase email around april 20th.  The cost of federal and state
with efile was a total of 17$.

I used Turbotax one time about 5 years ago, did not have one of the forms we needed, even asked other people who just said “we were doing it wrong” and they could also not find it, also called TorboTax with no luck. End result was a $1200 difference between using TurboTax and using an accountant at the last minute (because of waiting on TurbTax shenanigans). Got a full refund on the software and will never use it again.

Went back to good old paper/calulator/brain power like I’ve done the last 15 years and haven’t had a problem since. Then I just enter everything into the pdf’s from the irs website, print it out, mail it in. Done and free.
