Anyone know the extent of the damage to the Stewartstown Community building from the electrical fire this evening?

Harry;

At about 5:55PM our fire dept along w/Fawn Grove, North Hopewell/Winterstown,Shrewsbury,New Freedom, Red Lion and Dallastown were dispatched for a structure fire at the community gounds. Upon arrival we found “heavy” smoke coming from the area around the electric meter on the building. Our crews were able to control the fire within 20 minutes. I have contacted the PSP fire marshal to come out and take a look tomorrow morning. We know the fire started around the electric meter but at this time we don’t know why. This fire is not suspicious in nature. I do not have a damage estimate at this time.

Wow, I was even home all night last night and didn’t hear any of the sirens (I’m only a couple houses away and had all the windows open - YAY SPRING!).

Hope there wasn’t a lot of damage!

My daughter was up at the playground with some friends and saw it.  She said someone told her it was the batting barn.  So can someone please clarify that?  Was it the Comm. Ctr. Bldg. or the batting barn?

Thanks!

Most of what I saw with smoke and electrical popping was on the West wall of the main building, I had heard some mention of the batting barn but I was never on that side while I was up there.

Thanks Chris!

My daughter did get some pic on her cell phone.  She heard the popping noise too.

velvetstevie;

The fire was located in the community building. At this time I have estimated the damage at $35,000. There was a lot of smoke damage, but very little structural damage. Fire investigators will be there on Monday. Please keep away from the area of where the fire was located, there is fire line tape around this area.

I’d like to thank everyone at Eureka Fire and Ambulance, Stewartstown Police Department, and all the many others that responded to the Community Building fire.  It’s looking like the smoke damage might not be as bad as initially thought, so that is positive news.  We were fortunate there was no injury or loss of life, and fortunate that it happened when it did, on such a nice evening where there were plenty of folks around to report it.  Had it happened overnight, I fear we would have been looking at a much worse outcome.  It’s safe to say some of the history of this town as well as an important landmark were saved last night..........thank you grin

Glad to hear it isn’t as bad as first thought. Have alot of great memorys from there. All the dances that used to be held on Friday nights, slow dancing to Journey’s Open Arms, entering a break dancing contest, watching the Lost Highwaymen play, and....

I don’t know but I think it would a great thing for our kids to have.  Northern Baltimore County does it.  It’s called “Teen Center” and they do it every Friday Night at Hereford Middle School.  One of the parents volunteers to be the DJ, the “social committee” provides the snacks (i.e. doritos, chips, soda, pretzels) and the kids have a blast.  I was trying to get my son’s Young Marines unit to do something like that up here.  You know, charge a nominal fee to get in to cover the costs of chips and stuff.  Hey, the kids would be supervised and it would give them a positive outlet to release some of that pent up energy!!!!!  smile

I think we paid a buck or two to get in, but had a real DJ. Not some old fogey parent (I am almost in the category now) playing his Slim Witman collection smile

I was a 70’s teenager and we had live bands play at teen club at North Harford and Fallston

high schools. No dj’s or cds, or Slim Whitman lol It cost $2.00 if I remember correctly.
