KATYS DAILY - 17 April 2008 05:41 PM

I sort of figured that they are looking for drunk drivers. Instead, they decided to ticket law abiding citizens my husband, me and my 11 month old son who were just trying to get home after my husband finished working unloading junk into a dumpster all day for the house he is selling. Normal working class citizens just trying to get to and fro…

Yep, thats called Probable Cause for us, little stops like that can turn into big stops that way. Wow, running a stop sign with an 11 month old son in the car as well…

Dear Chris,

I know all about Probable Cause. Maybe you and I should talk sometime. Going 1/2 mile per hour through the stop sign at 11 pm at the night is breaking the law but no one other than the police officer was around to see and my husband was not putting us nor anyone else at danger. This would have been an appropriate situation for the police to give a warning to after recognizing we are new to the community and don’t have a history with law enforcement. We know what the focus is now locally, so we will definetely keep that in mind. We are competent, law abiding citizens. The police need to focus on the true criminals and leave the law abiding working class citizens alone.

You keep say you are law abiding, but you admit to coasting through the stop sign.  I don’t know why you think that now that you are in a small town it should be okay to break the occasional law.  Your husband obviously did not see the police officer at 11:00 at night, who knows what or who else he might not have seen.  The situation could have been a lot more serious.

It is possible the police officer had his lights off and was impersonating a parked car.

I’m sure Katy meant they were law-abiding before they arrived in Stewartstown and became Bonnie and Clyde.  grin

Man...I don’t mean to pick, but pay the fine and next time stop. All the way.

When I first moved to town I too was introduced to the local constabulary...rushing home from Lowes in York with supplies and left town a bit too quickly. I was wrong, took the ticket, and paid my fine. I don’t exceed 45 coming in or out of College Ave anymore, either.

The cop could not have been any nicer.

Of course, I unfortunately have had a lot of experience meeting officers for speeding infractions ( red face ) so maybe that’s why I take my lumps as I receive them and thank the cop for being nice...heck, have never gotten a ticket I did not deserve.  cheese

(despite that, I have no points as I go to court whenever possible if nothing else than to get the points reduced. In all seriousness, if you feel wronged about your husband’s ticket, don’t blame the cop for doing his job (even if he was overzealous, you DID not fully obey the sign); go to court and beg mercy from the judge. The courts are so crowded that they always simply say that if you have a clean record and plead guilty, they will give you PBJ (not a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich, but Probation Before Judgement)...you pay court fees and keep your nose clean for a year and wash your hands of the whole thing).

I don’t think that they do PBJ’s around here Yuppy.  You get points taken off after a year if you don’t do anything wrong for that year.

This is true, however you can take a court date and the judge may or may not assess points. But it is not a PBJ.
