How long has this forum been around? Can the moderators tell me about themselves? Also, how is the forum funded/supported? It is by volunteer basis? V/R, KATY

Started by Dan Baldwin around 2000 I think.  It is maintainted and funded by Dan Baldwin.  The moderators were suggested by forum members and selected after meeting with Dan.  The moderators are Dan, Alex, and myself.

Is there something specific you want to know about the moderators?  I’m still waiting to hear about you in THIS thread smile

What Chris said…

About me…

Moved here when I was 4 in 1974. Lived in town on High Street. Went to Stewartstown Elementary. Moved out to East Hopewell in 1979 to a new development called East Hopewell Manor (first real development in the area). Lived there until 1991 when I moved out and got my own place. Graduated from KD in 1988.

Lived in York, Ephrata and Northern Virginia until moving back up here in 2002. My wife (originally from Honey Brook PA near Morgantown) and I bought my old house from my parents so I live in the house I grew up in.

I work in the IT field as a project manager and consultant. I volunteer at Eureka as an EMT and Firefighter. I also work part time EMS in Penn Township and Dillsburg. My wife is a volunteer and PT EMT as well (same places). Very active in local issues especially taxes and environmental. I also present to parents groups about Internet safety for youth.

My wife (Dawn) and I are in our late 30’s. We love to relax with a nice bottle of wine (love Naylor’s Summer Sounds). Love Celtic festivals as well. We have been married since 1996, no children.

My education background is 1 year at DeVry Institute of Technology in Business Operations Management. I have taken many business courses over the years just to gain more knowledge but have found life’s experience to be more valuable than any classes I ever took. I have been in the IT industry since 1989. I owned a successful consulting business for 5 years in Northern Virginia. I have traveled all over the US and some International travel working with many Fortune 500 firms. I often draw on my experiences with multiple industries to help my clients improve their business processes.

I have been involved in this forum for a long time. It is very unique and a great tool for communications in the community. I prefer not to moderate and prefer that people self-police. I do try to keep my opinions out of my moderation duties.

I just moved to Stewartstown in December 2007. I lived in Harford County, Maryland and grew up in Anne Arundel County. My husband lived in Harrisburg, PA. we consolidated residences, kept our jobs and moved to Stewartstown. I have a longer commute than his. We moved to Stewartstown because we liked the area, and could afford living plus wanted a nice place where our son could grow up. I have two Bachelor’s Degrees, one in Criminal Justice and another in Language. I find the forum real helpful about gathering information about the community. I am concerned about the future of my son’s education, specifically after elementary school based on what has been discussed in this forum. That is probably no matter where you go though. Schools have rules and policies that don’t always make the best sense. I think the moderators are good to have because you sound like you are all pretty active and aware of what is going on in the community and can also identify or clarify issues that arise. As far as what I would like to know about the moderators, I would like to know your educational background, your age, and type of employment. Just to know, so that I can understand who I am talking with and how you relate to issues. V/R, KATY

I am originally from Parkton, MD.  I moved here with my parents in 1991 and we loved it and made it our home.  I got married and my wife and I made it our home as well.  I am college educated, in my 30’s, and I work in funeral service.  I am also a member of the Stewartstown Borough Council and served on the Stewartstown Borough Planning Commission for several years.

KATYS DAILY,
My husband and I are originally from Harrisburg.  What area is your husband from?  We moved here in 2000 when my husband took a job with AT&T in Baltimore.  The commute was a bit much.  I work for McCormick.  I’m a 1987 grad of Central Dauphin and my husband a 1981 grad of Bishop McDevitt.  I have some college, but met my hubby and dropped out for what seemed like more important things at the time - never looked back.  Seems to have worked out fine so far!  We have 2 teens.  One a frosh at KD and the other an 8th grader at SEMS west.  When we were looking to move, we were just amazed at the difference in prices for houses.  So we ended up staying in PA - which worked out better as we like the politics here a bit more than MD wink

We really like the area.  It’s nice and quiet.  The kids are happy and involved with sports.  My only wish is that there was more around for them to do.  A theater would be the greatest thing since sliced bread if we could somehow get one around here.  I hate having to drive the whole way to York if they want to go to a movie.  It’s also a pain to go to the mall.  I keep hoping that Target or Kohl’s or maybe even a Costco would look into the spot where the old Kmart was.  Gas is just getting too much to run up to York without a plan on all the spots we need to hit.  We plan on being here until we retire.  Then, we want to move up to our cabin in central PA and travel the world!

Guess I’d better chime in here!  I started what became SYC Life in November of 1999 and included hosted forums.  There have been a few revisions since that time of course.  At the time I was traveling a lot for work and wanted to contribute in some way to the community.  I also wanted to learn more about web development so just combined the two desires by creating this site.

As for me, I came to Stewartstown in the fall of 1997 from Ohio due to a job promotion relocation.  I grew up mostly in western Pennsylvania and in Ohio, with a short stay in Indiana.  As an adult I lived in northwestern PA and northeastern OH before coming to Stewartstown.  My career spans industrial maintenance, instrument & control system tech, instrument, control, & electrical engineering, several areas of information technology (AS400, network, pc services, manufacturing IT, etc.), project management, corporate quality, and inventory control.  Guess I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up!

My post-secondary education includes theology, aviation, engineering, and business management.  My 12 year degree (well actually a bachelor’s, but it took me 12 years since most of it was earned as a married adult with children, and I didn’t know what I wanted to do!) is in business management.  Both my work experience and education could be described as eclectic I guess.  I’m 50 years old and have 3 grown children (the last one graduates from YTI in May!).

Hope that helps.  I tend to keep a low profile, so this is a big post for me!  By the way, Alex and Chris have been immensely helpful since agreeing to help moderate the forums.  They do an outstanding job at what is generally not the most appreciated activity one can be involved in.  Frankly, they do it better than I do!

My husband lived in Harrisburg for the past 9 years before moving to Stewartstown. He grew up in Cumberland, MD. What do you think about KD school?

The moderators were suggested by forum members

I must have missed that.  Did that happen in a thread?

One reason you may have missed this (I did too) was that it was posted in the “SYC - All” section of the message board, not in the “SYC - East” where most of us post and read.  I will point out that the entries in “SYC - East” are substantially more than in the “All” section.  Knowing this, as Mr. Baldwin must, I find it odd that he did not either post his notice in both places or just in the “SYC - East” section.  I also note that, even though there were 228 views of Mr. Baldwin’s post, there was not one single reply.  I have taken an interest in this item because I have noticed of late one particular moderator who seems a little eager to censor members’ posts.  Of course, censorship may have been warranted but we will never know, will we?.  Prior to the addition of two more moderators, I almost never noticed Dan Baldwin rejecting posts in the past.  Now it seems more frequent.

I didn’t really see a need to reply in the posting for moderators, esp since it said PM for yoour choice. Yes the East side is more prevalent then the west side or the All, but if there are new postings in ANY of the sections, I always check them out. As I am sure most people do, could be wrong on that point though. I actually chose Alex and Chris as my choices for moderator and I think both are doing a great job. And I don’t think anyone has jumped the gun in “censoring” any posts.

Wolfgang,

Only Dan could answer “why” he posted it where he did, I doubt it’s a conspiracy though as you seem to lean towards.  The website started as stewartstown.com, so it only makes sense that the East forum is more active, but I’m sure he posted it in ALL since it’s SYCLife now, inclusive to all of SYC.  Moderation (censorship as you like to call it) probably seems more frequent because it is, although not much more at all.  I think you’ll find that Dan moderated very little in the past as he had very little time to spend on moderating.  There are now moderators for these exact reasons, more heated discussion/activity and Dan still doesn’t have the time to dedicate to the moderation side.

If people could only behave, moderation would not be required zipper
