Please read this breaking news story below my comments.

I just read a story in my old local paper The Dundalk Eagle about a family of 3 living under a tree in a tent at the local park because they are bogged down in government red tape trying to get help with Section 8 housing.  That said, the President wants to open up the checkbook and send $770 million overseas because he wants to help stop outbreaks of violence because of shortages and high prices.

Is it just me or have we as a nation lost our focus?  Anyone for going out and finding an Isolationist to run for President?  I think that we need about a dozen years to lick our own wounds and get our house in order instead of being the world’s keeper.

WASHINGTON — DEVELOPING STORY: President Bush is announcing $770 million in new international food aid at a 3:30 p.m. ET event at the White House. The money would have to be approved by Congress.

The president is also to discuss rising food prices and assistance to development programs, a senior administration official said. The president plans to announce programs being designed to make sure food aid isn’t needed in the future through increasing productivity and trade in communities so that they are less in need of help.

Prices for rice have spiked in recent months, in particular in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam and other Asian countries. Rising fuel and fertilizer costs have been blamed for the hike, which is as much as 50 percent higher than last fall.

Last month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture forecast global rice stocks for 2007-08 at 72 million tons, the lowest since 1983-84 and about half of the peak in 2000-01.

The money being offered by the president is aimed at meeting immediate needs but the president has said previously he is concerned about shortages causing outbreaks of violence.

couldn’t agree more.  There was even an article in CNN today about how immigrant workers in California can’t afford to send money home to their families in Mexico anymore due to the rising costs of fuel and food here.  huh?

I think the govt continues to do these charitable things as PR moves.....plus they are playing with our money so what do they care.  Its much less news worthy to help out our own.

No MarkG it isn’t you...it is America today. We are all in support of making sure we don’t offend any one in our country and our own citizens rights are taken away in order to support such causes as accomodating illegal immigrants in our country. Our country has truly lost sight on focusing on America and the American People. The three presidential candidates are not the best and/or the brightest and in my opinion its going to be the luck of the drawl who ends up winning.

I agree 100%.  Politicians today seem to have lost all common sense.  Lets take care of ourselves (Americans) first!
We can not and should not be the world’s keeper. We can’t afford it, plus it results in resentment within the countries we “try” to help.
Lets all write and call our Federal Representatives and urge them to shift spending to US priorities like refineries, bridges, roads, etc.
A side benefit would be that it would create more good jobs in the US.

Speak for yourself, I am oh so not politically correct one bit. But as far as accomodating illegal immigrants, I gave four of them a very nice place to stay today and some new shiny silver bracelets. And hopefully my counterparts I turned them over to will give them free airfare to a “nice” location for a little vacation.

I do agree that some commodities are out of control.

In my microcosm of the world, both PA Gov Rendell and MD Gov O’Malley have increased spending for criminal substance abuse and community rehabilitation.

Now, if only I could afford to DRIVE to work.

Speaking of driving to work, Ravi Zacharias gave an interesting viewpoint on 95.1 WRBS this morning about how the U.S. has made a difference in third world countries.  I’d be interested to know what the long term possibilities for receiving the payback is.

Good. I’d like to hear that more often. I strongly believe that unless one takes the necessary steps to be legal in our country they shouldn’t be here. I think that is probably not the majority of the time that you here about deporting foreigners back. But you here about plenty coming across the Mexican border, illegally and immigration can’t get a handle on it. BTW-How long where they in our country before it was recognized they were not legal?

Sweet, Law Enforcement giving out the bracelets!  Good job!  The problem is that you do your job and the revolving door just lets them right back in.

See we can be very nice at times, though the bracelets are kindy uncomfortable and restrictive. Yeah that is a big problem, hence the “vacation” term smile

I think there are just so many special interests promoting things that only make sense for them.  One countries aid package is another corporation’s business opportunity.  I think things go deeper than we need an ‘America First’ policy.  The system itself has become corrupt at the core and the average person doesn’t really see it until they start digging.  Many just poo-poo it and say “it’s all just politics and that is the way it is”.  Of course with today’s media it is politically incorrect or unpatriotic to express anger about any of these topics - in fact almost any topic really.  Local democracy and media may be the only way to help things and reach average folks.  If the system continues to break down and people do not participate locally at an informed and intelligent level, I believe the outcome would, unfortunately, be inevitable if you look back historically.

Good points Jason.  Just last week I asked a young lady that works for me if she was going to vote.  She had registered when she got her license, but she said that she was not really concerned about politics.  I asked her if she watched the news when the folks in Iraq had the opportunity to vote for the first time since Hussein’s removal.  I told her that those folks walked for days through military zones, they were being shot at and abducted yet they wanted to vote.  They held up their purple dipped fingers in pride.  I then reminded her that the voting station for us was less than 1/4 mile from us.  She didn’t vote.

Our apathy as a country will be our downfall.

When you say “this time” do you mean that this hasn’t been the first time that these particular people were arrested/deported or this time in reference to other arrests made for illegal aliens?

Out of curiosity, which of our rights have been taken away to support illegal immigration?
