It was on the School Board’s agenda last night to vote on whether to add girl’s lacrosse as a school sport.  Does anyone know if they voted in favor?  I sure hope so.

I did not stay for the whole meeting last night but someone came up during public comment and was anti-spending money on lacrosse.  Then someone from the board pretty much said the same thing...somthing like ‘Cheerleading has been asking for 3 years for $4500, track and field has been asking for several years for $6000, etc, etc.  and now lacrosse wants $34,000 to start a program PLUS $160,000+ for a field...this would be alot of $ for only 43 students....’.  I got the impression that it was not a very popular idea except for the lacrosse crowd.  But like I said, I had to leave so it could have turned out differantly.

Majority of SB voted yes.  Two SB members voted no. So...we now have a girls lacrosse team.

wow...wonder what the justification was for NOT giving the cheerleaders the money they’ve requested. So is softball or soccer going to suffer from this decision? Is there really enough folks for all three sports? I know the soccer team was lucky to have enough players go out for it a few years back.

Actually they will need enough players for 4 sports.  In the spring the options for girls are currently softball, soccer and track so adding lacrosse will make it 4.

Why is a field needed?  That’s a big hit, we played lacrosse on the soccer field in high school.

no idea.  Football has been playing on a crappy field for a long time.  I think since field hockey now has a really nice field to play on, everyone wants the same.  Though from what I hear, field hockey and its supportes are responsible for that.
Someone mentioned boosters at the meeting too...thats a great idea....contribute and rally around your sports program.

If I was running low on funds I certainly wouldn’t run right out and buy a new car............unless I could get everyone here to chip in. Well, how bout it? I will let you pick the color and everthing. I mean if you are gonna pay for it, you should have a say in it....right?
Wait I forgot we were talking about spending money on SPORTS. Lets see.......what is most important? Learning Algebra or playing ball? How about we start a vocational class that teaches how to build ball fields? Do they teach economics at KD?
I just can’t stand to see people lose their homes because of tax increases so our kids can play ball.....sorry.

I for one am glad to see it passed.  Yes, I am a girls lacrosse parent.  I am happy that when my daughter hits high school she will be able to continue to play the sport she loves.  There are 200 girls in the Fawn girls lacrosse program.  Our high school girls are the York County Girls lacrosse champs for 2007 and are undefeated so far this year!  Next year they would not be able to play with the other high schools unless they are sanctioned by the high school.

As for academics vs sports--I think that when kids are involved in sports, they are also more focused on the grades.  If you don’t have the grades, you don’t get to play the sport!  Plus sports keep kids out of trouble.

Tell that to the York Catholic folks, who just had some star athletes arrested over the weekend for underage drinking.

In regards to losing homes, just take a look at the YDR when they advertise the Sheriffs sales. There are many going on in the area. Some are estate sales, some are due to bankruptcy for other reasons. Many are due to tax deliquency.

You can also down load and read through the tax deliquency list from the county. The list is pretty extensive and a lot of SESD homes are on there.

UPDATED:

Here are the deliquent tax amounts for SESD

Municipality / School Tax / County Tax / Municipal Tax

East Hopewell / 86,908 / 17,483 / 1,848
Fawn Township / 250,777 / 49,712 / 6,272
Hopewell Township / 266,322 / 56,153 / 2,901
Peach Bottom Township / 435,621 / 4,136,626 / 10,071
Fawn Grove Borough / 45,561 / 10,955 / 2,561
Cross Roads Borough / 24,625 / 4,380 / 298
Delta Borough / 50,879 / 9,352 / 3,833
Stewartstown Borough / 82,223 / 14,544 / 9,822

SESD TOTALS / 1,242,916 / 4,299,205 / 37,606

Peach Bottom includes what Excelon still owes so it is higher then usual.

County Wide Totals
22,700,897 owed to schools
8,422,249 owed to the County
3,010,446 owed to the local municipalities

Can’t wait to see the response to that.  There is absolutely no reason to be spending money right now on these new programs, they should be cutting spending not adding.  Don’t we soon have a new teacher’s contract to negotiate?

My commute from the Station to 851, yards are littered with For Sale signs, I thought they were the new yard ornaments and I missed the sale at Wal*Mart. Sure I know there are many reasons behind selling, but there were not that many(if any) a couple years back.

The teachers’ contract has been in negotiations for awhile now.
