It is a farm it is going to have a scent associated with it. It is part of living in the country. If the farmer is falling EPA regulations there is nothing you can do about it. And since stench isn’t really part of EPA regulations I’m sure that their is nothing that is going to be done. I hate to be so blunt but if you cant manage to live with the smells of the country then it may be time to move somewhere else. You need to remember that if it weren’t for these farmers then you would have nothing to eat. Everyone is complaining about the high costs of food but yet they are making it harder for the farmers to make a living. That seems very counter productive.
Please try to spare me the lecture on odors from farming. My Uncle [now deceased for over 30+ years] was a farmer so I’m very familiar with odors that come with farming.
Perhaps I needed to use a different word than “stench.” I selected that word because I felt it was a gentler word.
As for telling others and myself to move somewhere else, that comment is way out of line. I’m going to go out on a limb here in what I’m about to say, but it is possible I may have resided in the township longer than you. I was fully aware of this being a farming area when I moved into it. To set the record straight, I have never complained about manure application by any farmer. There are certain odors that are to be expected when residing in a farming area.
Please try to spare me of the lectures on farmers and the important role they play in food industry. I believe you are barking up the wrong tree on that comment.
I take umbrage with someone inferring that I’m responsible for making it difficult for farmers to make a living. If anyone is to blame as to why farmers are having a difficult time making a living it is the government!
Yes, the cost of food has increased a lot the past couple of weeks, again that is not the farmers fault.... it is the governments fault and the government knows it! I’m not happy paying increased prices on food no more than the next person. If you want to help farmers make a decent living and be able to remain in business contact President Bush!
I support local farmers and they know it! I buy eggs from a local farm rather than at the store. I buy beef from a local farm which the cows have not been treated with antibiotics. I buy produce in season from local farms. I do my part to support farmers. So please lecture someone else as you have targeted the wrong individual.
I will add one thing and that is the property of residents living within close proximity to the CAFO are zoned as ag/residential area not agriculture. The property of others who smelled the unpleasant odor reside in Stewartstown Station and Stewartstown Borough and their property is zoned residential. Perhaps those who’s properties are zoned ag/residential need to have their properties reassessed 50% agriculture and 50% residential and receive reduced school taxes.
I would like to add that my spouse and I have been diagnosed with asthma and that the odor triggered serious asthma attacks. We never had asthma before we moved here almost 30 years ago. We had to see our family physician who prescribed antibiotics and cough syrup so we could sleep at night. Like most people with insurance benefits the insurance company only pays 80% of doctor visits and prescriptions. Doctors in this county do not accept 80% and demand the other 20% remaining of the bill. Pharmacies do not accept 80% and demand the other remaining 20%. I don’t know if you ever have had a prescription filled for antibiotics or the last time you might have one filled, but the cost of them are outrageous. That odor cost us $100 for the remaining balance of our prescribed antibiotic prescription. My name isn’t Mellon, Rockefeller, etc. no more than any one elses. Perhaps to you $100 is chump change but to others it isn’t, especially our elderly residents who most people don’t seem to care about in this area. :( Always remember if God wills it, that someday everyone will be elderly. And no, I’m not elderly.
