I think it is great they have done well. My hat is off to them.

The problem is where do we stop with expanding programs? Where do we draw the line? The school board is not capable of drawing a line. They never have been. They authorize spending the money and now say maybe we will have to watch what we spend.

Come on… they knew the deal with taxes going up again. We need true business people running our schools. This is not fun and games. It is a large business and needs to be run like one.

Last night I had a conversation with a great young student involved with the lacrosse program.  We talked about how well they had done this year and how happy she was that they were starting up as an official school sport.  We were talking about the costs of starting up the program, and I mentioned that the school budget is really stressed and many people are looking at the new lacrosse and track teams as unnecessary expenditures.  She said that the coach said that was not true because there was between $800,000 and $1,200,000 coming into the schools from the Excelon settlement, and there was more coming after that.  She also said that after lacrosse and track were approved the board was going to put a moritorium on new sports because of the budget.  I told her that was good and let it drop.  She has enough to worry about being a student and should not be worrying about the budget anyway.

according to the budget, Excelon was giving 840,000 annually and is now giving 800,000 plus a payment on 15 million in taxes. That only equals a little more than 1 million and less than a 200,000 increase. I guess the student is not very good at math…

I was not taking a shot at the student’s math skills, but maybe at the coach who is delivering the information to the student.  My whole point was that the kids are being told by teachers/coaches that there is plenty of money for this stuff.

I remember a couple of years ago when the 28% increase hit, and the coaches and staff told all of the athletes that the public was coming to the school board meeting to cut all of the sports out of the budget.  As a result, the entire right side of the auditorium was filled with coaches and athletes that perpetuated the rumor that the evil taxpayers were going to “lynch” all sports.  There could not have been anything farther from the truth, but the best way to incite a partisan group is by delivering the right propaganda.

I think we need a new indoor riding ring complete with a horse for each student that wants to try equestrian training.

How about an off-shore fishing program complete with a new center console for each student that wants to go after pelagic game.

But back to reality:

We need to charge admission to the public to view the great “Wooden Oboe” that the school district paid $5,000 for!!  Did that come with an “Oboeist”?

Or better yet - we need a pianist to play the Steinway Piano we just bought and cut a CD to pay for the sucker!!

Well- when the Superintendent is a former Music teacher, you can imagine how the money just drops from the sky....
Normally the response would be that there’s no money in the budget for items that are not assessed on the PSSA.  Last I checked, music isn’t a subtest…

That’s an interesting comment.  Doesn’t the board have to approve expenditures over a certain amount?

Exactly.  There is no way the Supt. can just arbitrarily purchase those things outside of budgeted amounts.

I would like to propose that SESD start a golf program.  It will only be fitting if the School District buys enough land for a full 18-hole golf course and develops the site accordingly.  Perhaps they would want to buy Lauxmont Farms.  This would get the County off the hook and, while this may be a little large at 1,400 acres, I am sure that the school district could bank the land for future use as a sports venue to be used as parents and the Board expand their laundry list of projects for taxpayers to fund.

Great!  There would be enough room left over for the new Polo grounds then!

I guess you have all the sports covered.  Wouldn’t it be better to have their own golf course though?  MarkG thinks polo might work.  Tiddly-winks anyone?  Can’t we find some sport that SESD doesn’t have that we could spend some money on.  Help me.  I’m struggling here.
