Getting other people’s mail has been something I have become custom to since moving to Stewartstown. I have been to the Stewartstown post office to complain and it has only gotten worse. If your first name is the same as mine or your street address is the same as mine, does not matter the street, avenue, or road name, good chance I have gotten your mail. My neighbors and I have become custom to checking our mail at our mailboxes to save us a trip back out to the box. It is not uncommon to have a neighbor’s kid knock on the door with a handful of my mail that was left in their box. Just last week we received a notice for postage due for the correct house number, but not even close on the street name. My husband put the card back in our mailbox and two days later the same postage due card was sent back to us. My husband put a note on the card and put it back in our mailbox. Four days later I received a small package in the mail. Without thinking I ripped it open to find a phone charger. Confused at why someone would be sending me a phone charger, I flipped the package over and the first thing I saw was postage due 25 cents. This was same as the postage due card and address to the same person. Very Frustrating!
We moved into Stewartstown Station 12 years ago, and the post office has been great up until the last couple of months. They say it is a new person.
There are a few houses on neighboring streets with the same house number and lately we have been getting their mail. Near as I can figure, the mail-person is good with numbers but not so good with the abc’s.
Of course, we are worried they are getting our mail. We still haven’t seen our government “economic stimulus” check yet.
Do you live on High Street? Maybe you’re getting my mail...hahaha.
Actually, we’ve only had a mix-up a couple of times in the 7 yrs we’ve lived here. It’s usually the same house number on High Street that we get mail for. I’ve always chalked it up to some automatic sort system, but I didn’t know others were having problems. Once I got my neighbors mail, but it’s usually the house on High Street.
But it’s never been a problem to where I’ve complained, because it’s only happened a couple of time (but it did just happen last week...haha)

High Street mail huh? Maybe it’s ours! We sometimes have missing mail but, it’s usually bills. We do get our neighbor’s mail sometimes. The most frustrating thing to me is the mail that comes addressed to people who used to own or live in our house. The previous owner is a friend of ours. She has not physically lived in the house since 1995. She moved to WV and rented the house out until a few months before we bought it in 2001. Last week, a York County jury summons came in our mail addressed to her!
I can’t tell you how many times I have put something back in the mailbox with a note saying “not our mail!” I too have called the post office a few times. More than once I have filled in that little information card with names of everyone in our household who should be received mail. But, apparently those little cards sit in a file at the post office and are no one ever looks at them!
It has become a ritual to check the mail at the box for us. Several times a month for certain I am putting something back in the mailbox or walking over to the neighbor. All the bills seem to find their way though
It happens to us sometimes too. I guess it isnt that uncommon in a rural post office with mostly contract labor doing the sorting and delivery. We usually just take it where it is supposed to be delivered.
Our mail person (lady) actually ran over my mailbox last year - then she just left the mail in the box on the ground and left. I contacted the post office and the post master said he would “talk” to her. No offer to repair or pay for the repair to the mail box or mailbox post…
Wow...I thought it was just me. I too get other peoples mail. My address is North Main and I always get mail for South Main. I used to put it back in the box, but now I just deliver it myself. Last week I got the mail for the house up the street AND the South Main address (I should charge the post office for delivery). Here’s a good one too...right after I moved here I mailed the water bill by putting it in the “Local” mailbox. After a week I noticed that my check hadn’t cleared...so I did some checking and the postmaster told me that the box for local mail would go to Lancaster and then come back to S-town. It made no sense to me but hey, who am I??? I NEVER mail anything from S-town.

Our mail person ran over our mailbox too! They were nice enough to knock with our mangled mailbox in their hands and apologize but we weren’t reimbursed either. We also frequently receive the wrong mail. Ever since moving here in 2001.
However I will say our mail carriers are usually really friendly and always wave and honk to my son if they see him in the window, which makes his day, so I’m willing to overlook some less than stellar service.
I just moved here in April and have the same problem. Constantly getting mail for someone with the same # in their street address and a similar name. It goes back into the mailbox with a note. They also don’t pay attention to the forwarding notices (I get all of the previous owner’s mail) and little notecards about who is supposed to receive mail at the house (I filled out two already).
I put a note with a packet of wrong mail out each week. My mail carrier is nice and sometimes replies with a note but it doesn’t stop, one time she stuck the note to a piece of new mail that was the wrong address!
At least they are nice here and come before 5PM, so its a good change from my previous experience.
My neighbor came to my door one night with my federal tax refund in her hand. Seems it was delivered to their house in error. Thank goodness we have honest neighbors!
just left the mail in the box on the ground and left.
What a gem. Although my mailbox has always been upright, once in a blue moon I get more mail than fits in the box or a package that is a wee bit too large to fit in it. One would think leaving it at the front door would be the next step but apparently the protocol is leave it on the grass next to the mailbox.
My favorite of all time though is figuring out how they got the package in the mail box when I cannot get it out. Thats rare too.
