I recently had the pleasure of speaking with the owner of the new Gold’s Gym that will be opening soon in Stonebridge. The facility sounds very nice and will offer some great services. Opening is scheduled for October for exercising and full service will be ready in January.
Special membership rates are available starting July 1. They are offering 50% off the regular rate (Discount is $24.99 per month versus $49.99 per month).
Simply amazes me how a business can be east of Shrewsbury, have a Shrewsbury zip code and a Shrewsbury (Glen Rock) telephone exchange and still say it’s in New Freedom. New Freedom is nice little town 3 miles west of Shrewsbury and 3.5 miles west of Stonebridge. I’ve had the opportunity to recommend the Hampton hotel to a number of travelers. They’ll ask “the one in New Freedom?” And I have to answer, “well, yes and no”, and then explain just where it is. Can’t explain why they call it New Freedom.
Glad to hear that Gold’s Gym is moving in to the area. Like most exercise places in York County in the past 30 years, we will just have to wait and see if they will make it. Many haven’t, but the Gold’s near Queen Street has done well.
Now all we need is a new restaruant or two to help the local economy and the tax base.
Simply put: The US Postal Service lays out it’s delivery routes independent of political boundries which were laid out in the 1700’s in many cases. The phone service lays out it’s exchanges based on where the lines were run. They are all independent of each other.
Stonebridge is a New Freedom zip code actually, Shrewsbury phone exchange, Hopewell Township (South Eastern School District). On the other side of 851 (True Value, Toms, etc), it is a New Freedom zip code, Shrewsbury phone exchange, Shrewsbury Township (Southern School District). I live in East Hopewell and we actually have four zip codes (Stewartstown, Felton, New Park, Airville), one phone exchange (Stewartstown).
I don’t know if this is the answer or not for sure, but our mail carriers are contractors as is the case in many rural areas. The actual postal clerks in the post office do wear uniforms I believe.
Still confusing to many travelers and probably newcomers, of which I am neither (over 30 years in N. Hopewell). Although progress is sometimes necessary, although not always welcome, times were simpler and sometimes a lot nicer back then. As for the point on the Stewartstown postal delivery, you are correct about independent contractors. They do have to follow all required procedures (uniforms are not included) of the USPS. They occassionally advertise for mail delivery people, all you would need would be a vehicle and the knowledge of the area to interview for the job. I would assume to be hired you would also have to pass security muster. Most rural USPS offices do not supply delivery vehicles as do many larger PO’s.
Ok so back on topic: What does everyone think of the chance of success for Gold’s in New Freedom? I have a free gym at work, so I won’t be joining, but just curious as to other’s thoughts.

Well, I’d love to join a gym, but I have enough in my basement I don’t use now. With Summer here and the game of Roulette we’re forced to play with the next Gas increase spinning in the chamber we may not have the cash to throw at a gym. As far as Gold’s success here locally? I’m sure there will be a lot of takers of the half-price membership sale, but we’ll see in a year or two when some of those memberships expire or a year membership is a monthly gas fill-up.
Personally I think it might be a good location for the crowd that lives in the Leaders Heights / Jacobus / Loganville / Shrewsbury / Stewartstown area. Many of them work in the Baltimore area. It is on the way to work or home from work. It is a low cost alternative to the gyms in Maryland. Several of my coworkers have expressed interest because of that fact. They don’t have to drive out of their way to get there.
Of course, the gas price issue is a big unknown. I know it has altered my spending plans. I suspect the same goes for a lot of us that commute to MD or beyond.
I know the owners of the gym and I can personally atest that they are really nice people. I am rooting for the gym to succeed. Does anyone know if there is another store going in that building or is it all going to be Gold’s Gym?
I know that at least one restaurant is going in in addition to the Gold’s Gym. It is not one of the big chains, but the owner does have several other locations , including one in Hanover.
