I am exploring Cell Phone plans that work in Stewartstown.

Can anyone provide information on the coverage of your cell phones in stewartstown?

I have Sprint and can get a very weak signal with many drops in my kitchen.  Everywhere else is dead.

Verizon?
Nextel?
Cingualr?
Others???

I have AT&T;and Stewartstown coverage is excellent as might be expected since AT&T;has a tower here.  I believe Cingular uses AT&T;towers for much of their service so I would expect that coverage to be good as well.

I am presently using Nextel and typically I have a signal. Outside it works best, and inside my house is okay. In the basement… Forget it.
As I have a Maryland number my signal is typically coming from Jarrettesville/Forest Hill area. As I travel West towards Shrewsbury I pickup a tower a couple of mile North of Shrewsbury.

As a member of the Hopewell Area Recreation & Parks board I was tasked with contacting the various cell phone companies to see if they were interested in providing coverage on the existing AT&T;tower.

Verizon wasn’t even aware the tower was there. Cingular and PCS were thinking about merging so their were no plans to expand their system.
The only company remotely interested in the area was Nextel.

A couple of months ago Nextel agreed to place a tower on the water towers near the elementary school and paid a deposit to reserve space, however the installation was delayed after the Telecommunication companies all took big hits on their stocks.  I’m not aware of any new information about Nextel’s plans.

Verizon I know was interested in putting a tower in Shrewsbury, near I83 but the public didn’t want a tower there, and the new tower by the rest stop is off limits except of emergency services.

I use T-Mobile (it was known as Voicestream until taken over by Deutsche Telekom in 2002).  Until the last two or three months the signal was very weak, even cutting out for short periods of time.  Recently the service seems to be more reliable.  It is still frustrating to have momentary loss of signal on I-83, when between Exits 4 (PA) and 27 (MD), but that’s not really a local issue.
I’m assuming that at home we are at the very edge of the coverage area (in Cedar Lane) of the Shrewsbury transmitter/receiver.
The only reason my wife and I went for Voicestream back in 2000 was to get a GSM service, and be able to use our phones when visiting relatives and friends in England and France.
Overall we are pleased with our service.  Deutsche Telekom has plans to improve their coverage areas (i.e. fill in the blank areas on the map) over the next couple of years.  Whether they have the money to invest is another question.  Interesting that yet another European telecom company wants to get into and expand in the US marketplace.  Perhaps we’ll all eventually benefit from having wireless systems that “speak” the same telecom language… wherever we are.
