Hello there.
I’m a Brit who lives in Stewartstown.  I know of at least one English couple in the town (Lee Street).  I’ve also seen a very large Union Jack on the inside wall of a house in High Street.

My wife and I came here from Cockeysville MD in 2001.  Immediately prior to that we lived in the Cotswolds, in Gloucestershire.

We’ve also know a house near Lineboro (on the way to Westminster MD) that always flies a Union Jack as well as the Stars and Stripes.  It would be good to contact a fellow countryman.  We met a Brit couple who lives in Glen Rock when in our car outside the Shrewsbury Post Office.  She had spotted the GB sticker in the car’s back window.  We also have a Union Jack as the front “License Plate”.  cheese

Well, make it one more Brit. I am in Stewartstown Station. Born in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Been in the States almost 28 years. If you traveled down Crosstie during the world cup this past summer, you would have seen the Union Jack flying off the deck.

Small world, no? Spent about 15 years in Baltimore, and about 8 in Cockeysville before saving my sanity and moving to the ‘country’

Well, well, hello Joe.

You may know Allan and Shelley at 146 Crosstie.  I used to work with Allan.  We keep in touch.  He has descendants from Scotland.

I used to stroll along The Stray many years ago, when I went “up North”, from Bournemouth.  I ran project management courses in one of the hotels (name escapes me).  Our company, Hoskyns, had use of the hotel’s conference facilities.

I’ve been visiting the States since 1981, lived in Houston TX and Lexington MA in the late 80s - early 90s, then returned to England in December 1992.  My wife, Mary, is a Texan, born in San Antonio.  After nearly ten years of marriage we still enjoy our cultural differences.

We have English friends in Sparks MD, Timonium MD, and Lutherville MD.  Alison, the lady we met at Shrewsbury Post Office, knows other Brits in the locality, here in PA.  Mary and I have suggested setting up a “Brits in Central PA” web site to stay in touch with each other.  Each of use already manages a family web site.  What do you think?

By the way, did you know that the Shure Fine supermarket in town, sometimes stocks Weetabix.  I have never found it anywhere else in the States in 22 years (except once at a rip off price in a British Shop in Bethelehem PA).

Best regards,

Alan,

Sorry for the delay in responding. A combination of being lazy and busy has prevented me from replying sooner!

Besides my brother living in Parkville, MD, the only other Brit that I am consciously aware of works with my better half in Hunt Valley. He is a Man U fan though, so I dont talk to him much. He’s been a bit unbearable since Man U beat Leeds 2-1 in early March. I’ve got a thing or two for ‘Sir Alex’. Football aside, he is a nice guy.  cheese

Anyhow, a website would be nice. I am not sure that one exists at this point. The only thing that i’ve come up with during my casual browsing is a following for Tottenham Hotspurs in San Diego and a small Arsenal gathering in Key West. I guess you can tell that I am football orientated.

British fare. There is a Scottish Bakery in Cockeysville, MD that carries alot of imports. Besides their egg pies (quiche?) and scotch eggs and shortbread, I could not tell you if the price is fair, and I dont recall Weetabix, but they do tend to carry cheese and tea that you might like..for a price!. If only I could find a proper ‘fish & chips’ place...I would be set. I’ll get you their address and phone next time round.

I dont frequent the Shur Fine, but I will make a point to keep an eye out when I am there. (Darn Walmart!)

Talk to you soon
Joe

cheese Joe,
The only decent fish’n chip shop I’ve found is at Rehoboth Beach DE!  drive straight into the town centre, and it’s on the right a few hundred feet before you have to stop at the boardwalk.  It’s run by an Englishman who opens for the summer season, then stays in Florida for the winter.
I’m more of a rugby fan m’self.  My son, who lives in London, is a footie fanatic—he supports Chelsea.  He lives not too far from Stamford Bridge.
Cheers,
Alan

heh fellow Brits, I’m am the topic of the original message posted by my wife. I have to say that it is a small world even to find one brit out in middle of nowhere let alone 4 or 5. I’ve been in the US since 1999, starting off in that beautiful city of Baltimore.......NOT before moving up here to Stewartstown.
I am a LEEDS UNITED fan with an absolute hatred of Man utd.........last season was hard to take with the double whammy of man utd winning the premiership once again and leeds being a complete mess........ridsdale should of resigned a long time ago and oleary should be still in charge.
A website for “brits in central Pa” would be great and would be something I hopefully could contribute to..................I would love to hear anyof you guys so please drop me a line at
take care
cheers,
patrick
