EPHRATA, Pa.—As winter nears, corn is becoming more than just a side dish at the dinner table.
Found in many fields across the Susquehanna Valley, corn can be used to heat homes.
“When oil was $1.20 a gallon, people weren’t going to burn corn,” said Lester Bowman, of Bowman’s Stove and Patio. “But at $2.50 a gallon, people are very interested.”
SURVEY: Are you looking for alternative ways to heat your home this winter?
Bowman sells corn burning stoves that can heat a home. While the stoves have been around a few years, recent fuel prices have launched them into a new stratosphere. Demand for the stoves is soaring, according to Bowman. He said he can barely keep them in stock.
“Everything in the States is sold. We can’t get anymore this year, so we had to go to Canada,” he said.
There some things you must consider before buying one a corn-fueled stove.
You’ll need to find a place to store several tons of corn. Also, a corn-burning heater will run a little more than $2,000.
