last week I stopped in Stewartstown Saubel’s to purchase lettuce. Green lettuce at close to $4 a lb.  i visited Shrewsbury Saubel’s and checked the price on green lettuce which was $1 less than Stewartstown Saubel’s. why is the same type of lettuce $1 higher in Stewartstown?  Saubels had a sign posted at both stores saying the reason why lettuce prices are so high was because of unexpected cold weather in northern California.

i drove to Walmart and checked their price of green lettuce 99 cents a lb.

maybe the person who purchases lettuce for Saubel’s should talk to the person who purchases lettuce at Walmart and buy it there rather than gouge customers.

this is just one item Saubel’s is price gouging customers. i compared other items and discovered Saubel’s charges less for the same items purchased at their Shrewsbury store than customers are charged at their Stewartstown store.

overall Saubel’s charges higher prices than Walmart.

also what happened to Saubel’s Shrewsbury meat department. the quality is the worst I have seen or tasted in all the years I have lived in the area, which is all my life. i am 4th generation of customers who patronized Saubel’s.

I agree with you there. Last night I stopped in for some romaine, and that was $2.99 a lb.

Although I am not defending Saubels, I can say that Walmart gets the prices they due largely in part to the quantity of product they order, their central distributing (no middlemen) and deals they work out with their supplier.

I do not mind a business trying to make a profit, but what I have seen lately at Saubels with regards to pricing, will make me less likely to visit in the future.

Saubel’s is close to home, and that is convenient.  But do my weekly grocery shopping there?  LOL!

Wal-Mart’s products are just as good, and I save tremendously over the course of each month.  So I’ll drive a few extra miles. 

That’s the whole point—you always pay something for the convenience of shopping locally.  Comparing shopping in Stewartstown with shopping at Shrewsbury forma customer perspective has to take into account the gas cost and wear and tear on your automobile.  Factor those in over, say, a 6 month period and local prices are, in net terms, not as expensive as they seem.

I drive 10 miles to Wal-Mart and I pay about 89 cents in gas at today’s prices.  My weekly shopping there saves me about $40 compared to Saubel’s.  I’m not a math major, but I think that net difference over the course of 6 months is something like $936.
