At about 4 o’clock, on Scarborough in the Station, I encountered two boys, about 13 years old, riding stand-up gas-powered scooters; running stop signs right across my path, having a great old time.

Are they legal?

Why can’t we get an answer to this simple question from the Borough Council or the police?  These motorized scooters are a nuisance, are unsafe, and parents should have better sense than to let their children wreak havoc on the community with them.

Scooters are addressed in the Skateboard Restrictions Ordinance #2003-002, You can find this on the borough website at…

http://www.stewartstown.org/ordinances.htm

The quickest way to get a simple answer on something like this is really to pick up the phone and call the Stewartstown Police at 993-5308.  They would be happy to answer your questions directly on something like this.  You could also voice your concern to the Police and Public Safety Committee, which meets the 2nd Monday of every month (tonight) at 7:30.  Lastly, you can always contact us through the borough website as well at…

Hope that helps.

Here’s the link to a blurb from the Stewartstown Police Dept. awhile back.  It links to PennDOT.

So, my next question is:  what is done about these things?  Are the kids given a slap on the wrist?  Are the “vehicles” confiscated?  I am sure 13-year olds aren’t given tickets.  Like so many other things around here, this area is lawless when it comes to nuisance lawbreaking.  There are simply not enough police to do the job and it has been made worse by the rapid growth in population.  I would ask the police/Council this:  Has there ever been a citation given to the operator/owner of a “motorized scooter in Stewartstown?”

Wolfgang, you seem to be upset that the police are “not doing their job” but my question to you is:  Have you ever called to report this to the police?  I have and they did respond.  As far as the police department answering your question on here...I feel that this is not the proper forum.  It is not their responibility to answer things like this on this site.  I would suggest that you GO TO A MEETING or better yet CALL THE DEPARTMENT.  If you don’t do either of these things then it’s your fault and you have no right to complain.  If you can’t seem to get any answers, then call the Mayor, he’s in charge of the deaprtment and I’m sure that he would be more then willing to listen to you.  Small town living has it’s good points and it’s bad points but I think that overall we have a great little town.

Thanks for the information Dan.

Unfortunately, the outcome is probably going to be that one of these kids gets hit by a car.

Makes you wonder about their parents, though…

I’d like to point out a key item that no one has mentioned yet..

Scarborough Fare is located in Hopewell Township.  Their police protection is provided by the State Police and is NOT proviced by
the Stewartstown Borough Police Department.

Residents of the Stewartstown Station who have concerns about these kids and scooters need to contact the State Police @ 911 and also contact their local elected officials at the Hopewell Township office @993-2027.

For what its worth, Friday night at 730p - in the VFW parking lot across from the post office on Main St., I saw 2 police cars, 1 marked the other was blue. lights flashing - both officers were talking to a kid who had a motorized scooter laying next to him.

We have been receiving a number of complaints about kids on motorized bikes back in that area. The blue unmarked car most likely was the Stewartstown Borough police.

The field that is located next to the VFW and the back parking lot are both located in Hopewell Township which makes enforcement
of something like this a little difficult.

Regarding Friday.....

A concerned resident reported the boy on the scooter to the police.  He was witnessed riding down the center of Main Street from My Three Son’s to Messinas and running multiple stop signs in Stewartstown Station at full speed.  This was reported to the SPD immediately and they caught the boy on his way up Main Street again and pulled him over at the VFW.  It is my understanding that he was given a citation/ticket of some type and the scooter was immediately confiscated.

Thank you to our police for addressing this serious safety concern smile

Good job, SPD.

Are the parents going to bear some responsibility for this?

the kid i saw sportin the scooter on amin st wasn’t really a kid.  he was a young adult, between 19-21.  he graduated with the neighbor kid and he graduated 2 years ago.

if this is the tattle tale thread i’d like to tattle on the owners of the old library the trash on the sidewalk and curb area is ridiculous.

The borough is aware of the trash around the old library. The new owners are being notified of their responsibilities and appropriate ordinances.
