Hi,
I wanted to take the kids to a Drive-in for a movie.  I found one in York at the fairgrounds and one in Dillsburg.  Does anyone know how these two rate?  Are there any others around?
We have been to Bengies in MD, but were hoping for something a bit closer.

I don’t think there is one at the fairgrounds in York, I’ve never seen one there. Maybe you are talking about Stoneybrook on Market Street, they closed along time ago (bummer). The one in Dillsburg I hear is nice. There was an article in the York Daily Record (can’t remember when) it was in the last week or two about drive ins and Dillsburg was in the article. It said they fill up fast and have to turn cars away. So if you go you should probably head up there early, I would rather sit in my car and wait then be turned away and disappoint the kids. I really miss the drive ins, my parents used to dress me in my p.j.s and take me, it is one of my cherished memories with my parents. Good luck!

There is indeed a drive in at the Fairgrounds in York.  They put up an inflatable screen on Friday and Saturday nights.  They show only G and PG movies.  Give them a call at 717-792-5223.  They are playing Pirates III this weekeind.

The York Drive-In is closed until the 15th, due to the yard sale and some other event. They are hoping to re-open it then with the premiere of the Fantastic Four sequel. The drive-in will run movies at the fairgrounds at 9 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day weekend.

There is a drive in in Bel-Air, The Big “M”, right on Rt. 22.  It was open a couple of years ago, we used to go all the time.  Not sure if it’s still open or not, but worth checking out.  They always had double features, one lower rated movie and one PG-13 or R later.

Ok so I was wrong, they didnt get the fantastic four sequel like the Dispatch said they were. They are showing Pirates. Starts at 9pm w/ a classic G movie and then Pirates starts at 930. Admission : $8.00 adults / $6.00 children 11& under, senior citizens , college students & active military with proper I.D.

The Big M has been closed down, that’s where I went as a kid.  They had great food too with car hop service.

How cool I had no idea this was at the fairgrounds. Sounds like fun, we’ll have to check it out! Thanks for posting the article.

We used to take our four kids to the drive-in, ALWAYS with homemade buttered-popcorn, some candy junk and sodas. Those were some wonderful experiences for my family and me!

About three years ago, I think, my two youngest daughters used to go to a drive-in in Churchville, Maryland. I’m not sure if it is still even open, but it might be worth a try for you. If I learn any more info, I’ll pass it along to you.

Foe those of you that have Adams Electric Coop for electric service, the last issue of Penn Lines (the magazine they send you) had an article in it about Drive-ins. It stated that Pennsylvania had the most drive-ins remaining of any other state. There was also a list of all of them. There was one listed in York. I’m not sure if they were referring to the one mentioned here at the Fairgrounds or not though. I have already thrown my copy out, but if anybody else has it, or knows someone that has Adams, maybe they can check the list again. It certainly appeared to be a very extensive and complete list of all of them.

According to http://drive-ins.com/ Churchville is closed. They have a pretty extensive listing of all drive-ins.

I’ve been to Haar’s Drive in in Dillsburg, its a nice old-fashioned type of drivein - a bit far to travel from the southern end of the county though.  They also have a double feature.  I would recommend it, if you don’t mind the drive.

That was the Big M as Bobby stated earlier, had plenty of good times there. They had at one point a little drive in type restaurant real close by, the Artic Circle, I believe. It was a real decent package at one time.

We haven’t been to the one at the Fairgrounds yet. It’s a portable inflatable screen. We have been going to Haar’s in Dillsburg for almost 30 years. It’s a great family owned drive-in.

Long, long, ago there used to be one on the Trail in Shrewsbury which is now a veterinary office. The owners were from New Oxford and it was too much on them traveling back and forth on the weekends. They had full time jobs and got worn down. They had great food too! Before these owners it used to be an X-rated drive-in theater which could be seen while driving on I-83. There were a lot of complaints about that.

Another one Columbia drive-in which closed either last year or the year before. That was a really nice drive-in also.

Stony Brook has been closed for several years now and was a good one.

The Bel Air drive-in is okay also.

Unfortunately drive-ins are becoming a thing of the past.

The owners of drive-ins must compete with theaters to get the latest movies. Haar’s and Columbia never seemed to have a problem obtaining the latest releases.
