So yesterday I got off work and wanted to have a beer or two and some wings. My GF and I decided to head down to My Three Sons in Jarretsville. Even though we don’t like most of their food, we like the bar side. So we got there and order a beer and I got my wings (which by the way were really good). We’re sitting around for a bit and realize something is very different. WE CAN BREATH!!! And then we see the sign, NO SMOKING DUE TO NEW LAW. I totally forgot about that and hadn’t been in a MD bar since it went nto effect. Man I cannot wait for PA to do the same!!

Hold your breath...lol I haven’t heard anything about PA changing their laws.
I quit smoking about 10 years ago and it was one of the best things that I did. Now, I can not eat in a room full of smoke.
Plus, it is too exspensive. I have nothing agianst people who do smoke though.

PA has been trying, its been up for vote several times now. And sadly, its been shot down each time as well.
We went smoke free in the county where i go to college at in Indiana and yes it created problems at first but it worked out great. Our state is trying to go smoke free. I hope PA does as well because I hate coming home and having to be in a resturant that still allows smoking.
I’m not a smoker either, and I appreciate not being around it. I still see a strange dichotomy in the concept of banning the use of something that is legal based on the impact to those around the user. It sounds like a good idea, and likely is. But what makes it ok to ban that, and not other things that are not safe to do around others? Sometimes I think too much.
I would guess your perspective on the new law depends a lot on wether or not you are a smoker.
Not necessarily. I smoked for 15 years (just celebrated 5 yrs smoke free in Jan!) and even when I smoked, I never smoked in the house, or when other people were eating. Personally, even when I did smoke, I couldn’t stand people smoking while I was eating, so we would generally sit in non-smoking anyway.
But I don’t have anything against people that do smoke, it’s their choice, just as it was mine. But man is it an expensive choice these days!!

Thinking’s legal, but sometimes it has effects on those that surround you.

I agree. Smoking is legal, so if the government wants to ban smoking, it should make selling of cigarettes, cigars, etc. illegal, which won’t be done because prohibition doesn’t work and the government would lose the high taxes paid on smoking products. I have a problem with the government telling a business what it can and cannot do. If business owners do not want smoking in their establishments, they implement it. And many do - Ruby Tuesdays in Shrewsbury is an example. And I don’t have a problem with the owner doing what he/she wants. My problem is when the government steps in.
Well at the risk of being pummeled, as I usually am for my stance on it, I have to disagree with the ban. I was a smoker for 10 years, quit 3 years ago. I tend to get nervous when the government steps in and begins to tell legitimate business owners what they can and can not allow in their own establishments. Smoking is a conscious risk meaning you know the risk is there and you’re aware of its affects on you vs something that should be regulated like fire safety hazards as that would be something of an unaware risk to the patron.
Edit: Removing fun things to be taken out of context and misconstrue, these sorts of arguments work better in person. :EndEdit
In the end I suppose I will be the first person in line at the bullhorn to tell the masses “I told ya so” when the government gets away with passing that next law that limits or bans something we’re all used to or enjoy. Always be cautious of selling short your lifetime of liberties and freedoms for the short term benefits of today.
I’m from CA, where they banned public smoking (including bars) in ‘94. I heard all the same arguments there as I’m now hearing here. As someone who has already experienced the ban I can promise that businesses still thrive and smokers still smoke.
And in the 14 years since CA’s ban and all our friends and relatives have yet to experience any further encroachment of ‘their rights’.
It will all be okay.
Though I do agree privately owned businesses should be allowed a choice.
