Our gasoline bill is rapidly encroaching $1K a month for two. It’s ridiculous! If the federal gov’t wants to ‘stimulate’ the economy, they should temporarily relax some of the federal taxes on gasoline. By the time I get that $600 check, it might pay for a tank of gas!
It’s pretty sad when you’re planning a vacation and gas to get there meets or outweighs the cost of the vacation!

I think the Fed tax on gas is only something like 18.5 cents a gallon. The State sales tax on Regular is 31.1 cents and 35.1 cents on diesel. The total tax cost is about 12% of the cost of a gallon now. It would be a drop in the bucket on a tank to just take away the Federal tax. I have a 30 gallon diesel tank, so I would save $16 on a $127 tank if they removed all of the state and fed taxes. I would not change driving plans because I saved $6 on a tank getting 13 MPG pulling my trailer, would you?
I think that we are in big, big trouble the price is going to keep going up and up. I am seeing weekly price changes from my vendors at my sub shop, and the reason across the board is transportation costs. I went into the grocery store for the first time in a month over this past weekend and got sticker shock!
I will probably be leaving my camper parked at the site in Fenwick Island this year, and my trips down there will be fewer and farther between. I may also look into brewing some bio-diesel. I am going to start a thread on that now and see if anyone is out there doing it.
I see lots of HUGE suv’s driving back and forth like it’s nothing. The people I’ve observed haven’t changed their lifestyle at all, that’s what makes me wonder ... the economy must be good otherwise.
My husband travels for business by car, and I commute to work an hour each way. The gas is killing us too. We also have two teenage drivers..... cough cough. So my future plans are to drive out to the light rail and use that as much as I can when the weather gets a little nicer. It will add at least 30 minutes on each end of my commute AND it’s a 20 min. walk from light rail to my office, so I’ve got to factor that in time-wise and weather-wise. It just sucks, but what else can I do? I’d love to get a hybrid car, but can’t afford it right now (and not in the near future either!). Heavy sigh.

Oh, I’m not doubting that the bulk of the money is going in the oil company’s pockets. 12% might not be much in the grand scheme of things, but with the cost continuing to go up, I’ll take it whatever I can get it!!
We’ve not changed any vacation plans yet. But I guess, luckily for us, our vacations this year tugging the trailer are all local and the one we have going to the West Coast was paid for a long time ago at cheaper airfare.
We were talking at work this morning about how the cost of gas is not only going to drive the cost of everything else up, but be a cause of a lot of people getting into bad situations regarding the rest of their bills. Salaries aren’t going up, that’s for sure!

I’m an SUV driver. And believe me, when it costs $70 to fill up my tank at least twice a week, I’m aware of it. But my truck’s paid for and we’ve got a car payment already - and believe me, we’ve toiled with this - having a second car payment offsets the gas savings (not to mention the insurance), so for now, I guzzle along.....

Me too Rainsong. Every day on 83. I traded my Blazer in 2005 for a new Malibu because of the rising gas prices back then and they weren’t even as high as they are now.
Yes, it’s affecting me and my family in a BIG way and causing me lots of additional stress in my life. I have even slowed down! I also use the cruise control as much as possible and really seems to help. My car has a nifty little computer on the radio that gives me my MPG. I keep it set there which helps me to keep my heavy foot off the gas pedal. Right now I am averaging around 23.4 mpg.
I plan to stop at the Giant gas station off of Queen St. tomorrow night on my way to my son’s guitar lesson in York and use my Giant Bonus Card gas reward points. Last weeks grocery receipt said I can get $1.10 off per gallon of gas and it’s good for one fill-up! Yahoo! I would not make a special trip just to that but, since I will be going right by it, I plan to take advantage of the savings. Every little bit counts!
Does anyone think that the truckers’ demonstration in DC will yield anything?
Yes/No. The deomstration itself? No. But if/when they go on strike - Yes. I work in a position that relies heavily on truck traffic. Many people don’t realize how dependent we as a society are on truckers, but without them, life as we know it in the US would stop. Not that life itself would stop, just the way we know it.
When trucks stop rolling in to stock stores and shelves with the goods you desire, and there are food/goods shortages, then you’ll realize how everyone relies on truckers.
Yes - I do believe you are right about the truckers. I hope that if they strike it will help us all. heh heh - can’t help thinking about a trucker’s strike oh so many years ago when my kids were little - all my oldest wanted for Christmas at that time was a Power Ranger figure. They were in short supply because of the strike - people were going crazy!!! LOLOL..... well, I guess what I’m saying is that I can put up with short supply if it will help us in the long run.
