I wish SESD would stop trying to legislate morality.

Morality or legality?  Is it legal to use drugs off of a school campus?

It is not really a moral issue.  It is an issue of the law.  Kudos to Carroll County!  It should not be the school’s responsibility to police the kids after school hours.  That said, punishment of kids caught doing drugs or other illegal activity in school or during school functions should be dealt with to the highest extent of punishment possible including expulsion.

If a student is doing something illegal during a school function that is on or off campus, I think that the school has a right to provide consequences.  If the activity does not directly involve the school then the school should stay out of it.  Hoeefully, the parents or the law will act on illegal or inappropriate behavior.

My post was really about how short our memories are for some.  The point is that this school year had many issues with off campus “events”.  Photos on My Space and kids on the football team that were disciplined because of the current policy. The policy creates a culture where tattle tale and hearsay is as good as a Supreme Court Ruling.  I just remember the stir that was made when it involved the sports team that was headed for a county title.  I also don’t condone any illegal activity by anyone whether it’s on school property or at home.  I bet many parents don’t have a problem with their kids having a taste or gulp of wine on occasion.  I believe its my job to discipline my kids no matter where the violations take place.

I can remember days when I was a kid, sitting in the VFW with my dad, after a day of watching him and the other guys cutting wood. He would slide over his PBR and let me take a swig of it. That was back in the early 80s, what fun that was.
