Went for a walk on the trail today and saw a slew of signs on each door of the restaurant that read “this structure deemed unsafe” and “closed”???? Anyone know the scoop?
There has been a small cloud looming over Lamotte’s for while. Which is a shame, not necessarily for the “Lamottes” brand but for the potential for that location. I have been told via my inner circle that the current owners are trying to sell everything lock stock and barrel for a pretty decent price just to get out from underneath it. Only one catch, it needs severe rehabbing from a structural standpoint.
You have to move with your business, make changes, make improvements....sadly he’s been living on the crabcake popularity for years but not doing much with regard to the building upkeep (the biggest issue) the service, or the food...all which have gone downhill in a bad way. Well, the crabcakes aren’t even that good anymore and the party is over. Such a shame, that location has huge potential. Look at the hotel across the street for a completely different view of how things are done, the renovations continue over there and the hotel is not going anywhere
Being a native Marylander that lived minutes away from G&M;and The Olive Grove for decades, I thought the crab cakes at Lamotte’s pretty much sucked. I did like the other food I had there and never once had a complaint about the service. I could see that the building was in need of repair, but sitting right on that creek isn’t the best spot for a structure.
I hope they come out of it OK. Restaurant’s are a hard business to be in.

I second this..well the part that LaMotte’s crab cakes sucked.

We were there a couple of months ago, for a birthday dinner (basically the only time we’d ever go). The crabcakes were good. They weren’t great, but they weren’t bad. They were good. I’ve had better, made better and bought worse. They were a little pricey for the amount of ‘good’ that we got. But I will give them that I only found one or two shells out of two crabcakes, which is odd - we usually get the one crabcake that has all of the shells in it. Still, for what you got the prices were a little inflated. Hopefully, as they recover, they can take public opinion into account and adjust their menu options and prices so that they go together a little better.
LaMotte’s was shut down by the Department of Agriculture due to NUMEROUS violations. You can Google the PA Department of Agriculture and search on restaurants in your area (makes for some very interesting reading). LaMotte’s is listed with ALL of their violations. Check out this link for more information: http://www.agriculture.state.pa.us/agriculture/cwp/view.asp?a=3&q=137994. I searched by zip code. It’s pretty scary.
On a happy note, there are many restaurants in the area that have done very well with inspections! Check it out!
LaMottes used to have really good crabcakes, but over the years, due to numerous different cooks and other changes, they are definitely not worth price any longer.
Seems like Larry LaMotte has lost interest in his restaurant and has been looking for a buyer for a while now - at least a year or longer. I know that he wanted to move our of state. The problem is the building needs major renovations and he still wants too much money for it. I talked to someone who was interested in buying the place, but because of the price and the amount of renovation needed decided to look elsewhere. Its a shame because at one time LaMottes was a good restaurant.

He should talk to the owner of the theater here in S-town. Maybe they can find someone who has way too much money and the want to spend it on two dilapidated buildings...a TWOFER special!
I can’t remember seeing a violation report that bad in a long time...and to get cleanliness violations like that, I have to imagine there was near zero end of shift cleaning going on. What a shame to completely let it go....so sad.
Thanks for all the replies...and that link. I passed that around at work yesterday and we were all searching for our favorite restaurants....it is something not quite shocking but sad to see how many violations some of them have.
Speaking of out of business eateries. Does anyone know what happened to Chaps at the Hill off of Queens St. in York? We went by tonight and the site is just rubble with a dumpster. Seems weird that it has been there so long and just went under.

They closed and are rebuilding a new eatery. I read that it the paper somewhere.

That is unreal. I am so glad I haven’t eaten there in a while. The service and food has been bad for the past few years, now I know why… The owner should be ashamed for operating like that. It is gross neglegance as far as I am concerned. He should not be allowed to open any other restaurants ever!
