We haven’t seen a snowplow at all for this storm.  I was wondering if any roads in our area have been plowed?

I am in East Hopewell and cannot see my road from my house.  Since I won’t be plowed out until tomorrow, I don’t have a clue what the roads look like.

Yeah!  I was surprised - plowed out early.  Actually snow-blown out.  Haha. Big snow blower on the tractor.  I was told the roads around here have only one lane open.

Never mind, we just had one go by!  With a chagrined shrug and smile as he plugged up our shovelled driveway grin No complaints here though, yay for hardworking plow drivers!

I thought they did an exceptional job in our neighborhood both earlier in the week and for this storm.  Our mailbox flew off the pole when hit by snow thrown by the plow, but it’s built to do that.  Might take a few days to find where the pole is buried in order to re-attach it though!

Yeah, our mailbox, including the pole, was taken out by the second snow plow pass, but what can you do?  There’s a lot of force behind all that snow!  We haven’t had our road plowed the last few storms so it was a nice surprise having our road cleared so soon after the snow stopped!

HAHA! I’m going to have to look into the re-attachable kind. Ours looks like it’s been through a garbage disposal. But it’s still standing.  Somewhere. In that mound of white.

We usually go a couple of swipes past the driveway with the snowblower to give us a ‘buffer’ so when they plow comes down, there’s extra room for the snow and it’s not usually so bad.

I had to go out around 830 this morning, for gas for the snowblower (because, while we have enough food to last us two months, we didn’t remember that yesterday).  The main roads had about 5-6” on them, but were fairly navigable with 4WD. We’ve seen plows out a couple of times today, plus last night through the neighborhood.  The borough’s usually pretty good about keeping on top of it.  Although, they had the tractor plowing out the community center lot at 9am today. I thought that was a bit of a waste - he should’ve been somewhere more useful.

That’s a good idea.  Our driveway is about 70 feet long and 2.5 car widths wide.  Our mailbox is about 20 feet from the driveway.  Not sure it would work for us.  This storm has definitely made us rethink buying a snow thrower.  Shoveling is hard work.

Plow came through early this afternoon, and I was pleasantly surprised to see them so soon.  I live in the Station and have a question about Main Street I have wanted to ask for awhile.

Why is Main Street often in worse shape than roads in the Station or 851 right after a storm?  As a main route between Maryland and York I thought it would be considered a main road and cleared better than the side streets, but it often seems to be in messier shape than other roads in the area, slushy when other roads are mostly down to pavement.  I haven’t been there since the storm so maybe that isn’t the case after this most recent storm, but I’ve noticed this after storms for several years.  Is this because different agencies are responsible for the surrounding roads and quicker to clear them?

I live in the Station too. For the first time I saw 2 plows working in tandem. They both went up the street one way, one on each side, and came back one on each side. Although that made for a very high pile at the end of my driveway, it was spot on against the curb - the best I have ever seen them do. So instead of having to dig out a 4 foot high 6 foot wide mound, it was more like 6 foot high and 2 feet wide. No complaints though.

As for the Station and 24 and 851 - its been a mixed bag in my experience. I have seen the station having the clearest roads while 851 is a mess and the next snow 851 is to the pavement and the Station is a mess. Don’t quote me on this though, but 851 and 24 are county responsibility, the station is the township. I cant imagine the township trucks not doing 851 and 24 though where they have to travel over to get to their roads.

Yes that is exactly why some roads are cleared sooner. The borough contracts with one local company to clear their streets and Hopewell Township road maintenance crew takes care of their roads just like every other muncipality throughout PA. PennDOT takes care of state roads no matter what muncipality the road is located.

Our township roads were cleared long before PennDOT came through to clear the state roads that intersect with township roads. The township road maintenance crew deserves a round of applause for doing such an outstanding job today! smile

PennDOT arrived 8:45 p.m. this evening to finish off state roads in our township.

PennDOT cleared state roads in Crossroads earlier in the day. That might be because rank has its priviledges [a township supervisor lives on the main state road there] or perhaps it might be just a fluke as to how PennDOT determines what state roads to plow first.

If anyone is unsatisfied with the way state roads or the interstate has been cleared, feel free to contact State Senator Mike Waugh’s office (846-2828) on Monday as well as State Representative Stan Saylor’s office in Harrisburg (1-800-372-9567).

Most of the farmers in the area plow resident’s driveways open as a supplemental means of income. When the noreaster hit our area in ‘96 PennDOT as the custom is solicited farmers with tractors and a good front plow to open up roads and paid the farmers an excellent wage for doing so.

My neighbors use Dean Miller, call 993-6766. You can tell him I recommended him to you.  smile
