RSJ: Apparently your kid is in tight with Dr. Shenk then? He/she talked to Dr. Shenk and found out exactly why we had only a 2 hr delay since Dr. Shenk makes the call? I’m guessing not. In fact while he/she is likely a good kid (since you care so much about parenting you probably have instilled some good qualities in him/her) and he/she probably means no harm at all what was likely repeated was hearsay from other well intentioned students. That hardly qualifies as a reliable source. All kidding aside, your child has as much a grasp on why we had school today as anyone else who is providing the lovely conjecture on this board.

By the way, does cursing make you feel like a grown up? Whatever happened to civil conversation?

As I stated, I do not know and do not care where they get their info in regards to closing/2-Hours. The fact my Kids mentioned this a major head scratcher, the closest my Kids are in touch with SESD political BS is the afternoon Bus schedule. Which was why I mentioned it in the first place, smoke/fire

As far as cursing goes, believe me the locker room garbage I was spewing before I re-wrote my piece several times was a lot worse. I’m sick and tired of the people bitching on here about how to raise my Kids, what’s good for them or what’s not good for them. The whole driving hazard thread is a joke when it came down to bus stops and the Kids.

Civil conversation went out the window when my Kids were brought up and you told me “And we all know that HS kids are the most reliable sources of information reguarding school policy. Seriously” That struck me as an insult, my Kids have no reason to lie about what they heard, whether or not they heard the truth. It was of no harm to me. Not to mention the other insults most of us Parents had to read in the “driving hazard thread” obviously we have a message board divided on how Kids are to be treated.

It is my understanding the decision to close or delay school is made by the District & the bus companies.  I think there may even be a 3rd party involved, but I can’t recall who that is.

I think you are correct Marge. It isn’t just Dr. Shenk and I apologize for my dissemination of misinformation. I believe it is a group decision.

RSJ I’m not here to insult everyone. I apologize that it came across as an insult. Believe who you want, but maybe you should do a little digging before you come on a public forum “spewing” your foul language and accusing decent people of purposefully putting your kids in harms way for the sake of a long weekend.

Again, it’s sad how much the district gets attacked here, especially with a slue of misinformation. We don’t need to add to that.

I thought because the schools were open, even if delayed, the main roads must have been cleaned up during the night.  I figured 851 to I-83 wouldn’t be too bad. No such luck!  851 was only slightly better than at 4:30 yesterday afternoon, and I went 20 mph most of the way.  851 was in MUCH better shape this evening though.

As a bus driver I can assure you that our opinion on school opening/closing vs 2 hour delay is not in our hands, we too were surprised about the decision that was made and several buses became stuck and most all had close calls.  My route alone was 20 minutes late to school this morning due to the bad roads that I drive (Lowe Rd and Mack Rd plus Woods and Coal hill Rd and Round Hill Church Rd were the worse roads IMHO ).  Even during my modified kindergarten run we had 2 buses that became briefly stuck but made it out luckily without any problems.

It is our understanding that the decision is Tracy Shanks and hers alone.  While I question the reasons of opening today I drove my routes slowly and cautiously and if I was late, I was late.

I can tell you that by holding school today the administration in no way puts children first. They put test scores first, which are not children.

Thank you Teresa for being responsible and putting OUR CHILDREN FIRST!

LLL: YOU can tell us huh? Based on what? Just because we had school when the roads weren’t great does not mean that test scores come first. There could have been any number of reasons. Again, it never ceases to amaze me how much we think we know. Sometimes the steps in logic are nothing short of dizzying.

By the way, the roads just weren’t that bad. Nobody got hurt. Sure, it was a slow go. Some were late and some parents had to choose to keep kids home. Everyone was fine! If we had crashes everywhere or kids getting hurt then that would be a different story. Drive 3-4 hrs north of here and they drive on roads worse than these were daily! Drive slow, drive smart.

Thankfully NOONE got hurt yesterday, but as the Teresa said there were many close calls, so why put our children in harm’s way in the first place?  I don’t need the roads to be down to asphalt 100% like Maryland does, but yesterday was totally uncalled for.  Our children DID NOT need to be on the roads yesterday and I am sure that the 1 hour delay today will make a huge difference in the conditions of the roads!!!!  I wonder if they will close school tomorrow with the next storm on its way?????

Just because the roads that you might travel just weren’t that bad doesn’t mean that all the other roads in our large school district were safe. Maybe after talking to a bus driver that is responsible for 30-40 children s safety and forced to drive in unsafe conditions (by the way there are no seat-belts either except for the bus driver. (we’ll save that discussion for another day) you would see the other side. Remember every story has 2 sides.

The health and well being of the children should always be the priority.  It is easier to be PRO-active rather than RE-active.  Don’t wait for someone to get hurt to change procedures, do it before someone gets hurt.

Good thing the kids who live within 1 1/2 miles of the school don’t have to walk as suggested by some Einstein on another mother hen chat within this site. That would have really sucked for them.

Three of us walked a mile to school every day, because we didn’t live far enough to get a bus (you had to live more than 1.5 miles for a bus). Snow, rain, sleet, heat.  It did suck, but we did it. Now the kids get bus stops in front of their house to go 1/4 mile down the street.  Talk about extreme opposites.

I know, isn’t it great living in the modern era of the horse-less carriage and indoor plumbing.

Now if I could just get the bus to stop directly at my house and the driver to come in and carry my 3 kids to the bus so thier little fancy designer shoes won’t get all slushy, that would be livin’.
