I do not agree with the decision to open yesterday, even today.  I took my kids in the morning instead of putting them on the bus and worried all day about their bus ride home.  I could not pick them up.  Sure enough, my daughter took one step off the bus, which stopped right on a patch of black ice (not busting on him, he couldn’t tell) and busted both knees, and ripped her pants on both knees.  If you want an injury, there’s one for you.  It was not a wise decision, especially when you look at it in comparison to the other days they’ve closed.

Three of us walked a mile to school every day, because we didn’t live far enough to get a bus (you had to live more than 1.5 miles for a bus). Snow, rain, sleet, heat.  It did suck, but we did it. Now the kids get bus stops in front of their house to go 1/4 mile down the street.  Talk about extreme opposites.

I know, isn’t it great living in the modern era of the horse-less carriage and indoor plumbing.

Now if I could just get the bus to stop directly at my house and the driver to come in and carry my 3 kids to the bus so thier little fancy designer shoes won’t get all slushy, that would be livin’.

Just make sure you’re done wiping their hineys in time!

Kids fall all the time. Do we nix school sports, musical, etc. because kids have gotten hurt participating in them? In fact, why send kids to school at all? After all, who knows when the next columbine may occur.

1000 ways to die every day…

I’m not downplaying your kid’s fall, only saying that it is not a reason to cancel school.

Yeah, ok, when you put your kids in sports, you sign a waiver regarding injuries of that type.  Why would they cancel or delay school at all?  I would assume not only for safety but because of the liabilities that can arise from accidents.  If your kid stepped off the bus on school property and broke their leg, or busted their head on the sidewalk, would you be so quick to say accidents happen?  I think not.  It has nothing to do with wiping their hiney.  Like I said there are many days when the schools have been closed for much less.

I WISH my son only had to walk 1/4 mile to the bus stop, or that it came to our driveway.  He walks over a mile to get to the bus stop.  I just chalk it up to living on a road that the bus doesn’t travel on, so we deal with it.  He has walked home, or ridden a bike, but I prefer him not to do this and have juggled my work schedule to pick him up.  There are just too many horror stories that you hear about children and even adults being abducted.

LLL: YOU can tell us huh? Based on what? Just because we had school when the roads weren’t great does not mean that test scores come first. There could have been any number of reasons. Again, it never ceases to amaze me how much we think we know. Sometimes the steps in logic are nothing short of dizzying.

By the way, the roads just weren’t that bad. Nobody got hurt. Sure, it was a slow go. Some were late and some parents had to choose to keep kids home. Everyone was fine! If we had crashes everywhere or kids getting hurt then that would be a different story. Drive 3-4 hrs north of here and they drive on roads worse than these were daily! Drive slow, drive smart.

Invisible User, I DO know for a fact. I can almost assure you that I know much more about SESD than you do.

“Almost” sounds really convincing. In fact I plan to believe everything you have to say concerning SESD at this point. I won’t even question where you get your “facts” from, oh SESD guru.

You have no idea who I am or what I know.

As for homeschooling or cyber school, yep they can be very good options. However, I have seen it gone wrong more often then it has gone right.... Mom and dad don’t tend to pay enough attention to what is going on. Jr. spends more time playing computer games and staring off into space then he does learning. Thus he knows the exact equivalent of ...nothing.

Like I said, these are great options but they take a TON of work on the part of the parents. Too often parents have hard enough time finding time to parent much less having the skills or time to teach as well.
