Black Mold at SEMS West

Word on the street is that an employee resigned from the West building due to black mold problems.  The employee, with no negative motivations, told the district why they resigned and provided test results.  The district instructed this employee (who gave a 2 week notice, but was told to leave the day the resignation was turned in) not to discuss this information with anyone and then requested names of people that this employee may have spoken too about this issue.  Those employees were then called in and “talked to” as well.

THEN we wonder why there is such a negative black cloud (pardon the pun) hanging over SESD.

Funny, I have heard this exact story as well. That building is scary on many levels.

This information does not surprise us. We have been telling the community and school district for 7 years, when our son first became ill. For the people involved, keep your chins up and know we are always here if you need someone to talk to. We tried unsuccessfully to get the school board 7 years ago to make changes and improvements to the schools for the health of those in the buildings. Toxic mold, no matter what the color, is a very serious matter and can have life altering effects (we should know we live with it every day).

As many of you have probably seen posted around the community, on this site and in the paper, we are having a free movie screening this afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the Fawn Area Rec. Building (100 N. Market Street, Fawn Grove). For more information about the movie, Black Mold Exposure: It Can Happen To You please visit the other thread on this site. By the way, a doctor will be at the screening to answer questions following the movie.

We are saddened that this continues in our community and would love, more than anything for people to understand the hazards of exposure. Until we treat the cause and not the symptoms people will continue to be ill. Again, we are here to help anyone who needs information or a shoulder to cry on. We were shocked to see this thread posted here this morning, but as they say, everything happens for a reason. Ironically our screening was snowed out twice and is rescheduled for today when this information was posted here.

Are there problems at all the schools in the district?  Or is SEMS West the main culprit?

On 2/19/08, a Buildings & Grounds Committee meeting was held at SEMS West.  Yes, the Superintendent confirmed mold and mildew at SEMS-West.  A tour was given of the boiler room and one of the classrooms.  SETRC taped the meeting, with the exception of the tour.  You can listen to the meeting here: http://www.setrc.net/HVAC/Forms/AllItems.aspx (021908BGPart1 and 021908BGPart2)

You’re absolutely right.  We’ve gotten nothing from the school district but heartache, medical bills and children living with a chronic illness.  After seven years, we expect nothing.  However, it saddens us to see that people are still getting sick and innocent people are still being effected.

Is anyone else concerned about this mold news? This is serious. Our children (at least mine) is in that building. If they knew there was a mold problem years ago why wasn’t it addressed then and cleaned up? Parents need to call the principal and express their concerns and find out what the plan of action is, if any. This needs to be addressed. Maybe this is why our children have bad allergies, headaches and stomach aches.

frog dog the word on the street is correct. i talked to the employee this weekend . there is more to come. i hope it doesnt cause my taxes to rise but those kids and employees need a safe place to work and be schooled. the admins and school board should be ashamed of themselves for letting this go on for so long.

My son is in SEMS West too and has been complaining of headaches.  Hmmm, wonder if it’s related.  He also has stomoach issues some of which we have resolved at home but, still complains of not feeling well during the week.  I think I will need to bring this up to his pediatrician to see if there could be a connection.

Velvetstevie, as parents who have been through this we would like to offer some advice.  Most doctors are not versed in the field of toxic exposures, if this is indeed the case with your child.  Typically, doctors will treat the symptoms and the patient will not recover until the cause is identified.  The symptoms may get better with medications, but the exposures or cause is still present.  If you would like to private message us we can give you information that may possibly help your child.

cheryl & frank ~ Thank you.  He does have these same symptoms at home on the weekends too so, I don’t know if could be related to a possible issue at school.  His pediatrician is very good.  If find that it’s possibly related to the school, I will get in touch with you.  I appreciate your knowledge & insight.

Many homes have mold/mildew issues and they don’t realize it.

Not to downplay anyone’s distress, but it seems as though we tend to go through cycles and Mold is the current “it” problem. There was lead paint first, then radon, now mold… of course, there are cases that are serious but these things don’t really effect the general public outside of the media generated panic that ensues after a real problem. I think it is wise to take care of serious issues but not to over react.

The schools air quality is tested every year by an outside, independant specialist. If it were unsafe, the kids wouldn’t be there. That is unless someone is out there to wreak havoc on our children… duh duh duuuuuhhhh (evil sounding music).

“air sampling is useful as a background screen for the possibility that there is a large reservoir source which has not yet been found in a building, and may be useful to compare relative particle levels between a problem area and a control area, or in an area before and after cleaning.

But a negative result (no problem mold found) when performing air sampling is one in which you cannot have high confidence unless it is accompanied by a number of other critical building visual inspections and other test methods.”

I personally know a family affected by toxic mold...don’t downplay it.  Do I think the district would purposely or maliciously put our children and teachers in harms way?  No.  But money trumps good intention and so does ignorance.
