This is really bothering me. First I hear about teachers with bad attitudes towards parents and now mold. Quite frankly, I don’t know which one came first! Moving looks better and better to me. But I was wondering....if there were claims about exposure to black mold, wouldn’t the state agency come in and test the building? If there was mold, wouldn’t they have the authority to close down the school if childrens health is in danger? Someone said it has been 7 years since some people claimed their children are sick because of it. Shouldn’t it be resolved by now by the proper authorities to see if it is true? I hope something is done about this so it can ease parents minds.

FYI...THERE ARE NO FEDERAL GUIDELINES FOR INDOOR AIR QUALITY IN SCHOOLS OR LARGE BUILDINGS. Therefore, there are no agencies that will come in and shut down a building. Our state gives all authority to the local school boards, who make every decision for the local school district. State department of health can only give recommendations to the local administration and school board. You shouldn’t just be scared of BLACK mold, as toxic mold comes in many colors. Believe us, we have lived this nightmare for seven years. We didn’t believe it either at first, so we started making phone calls to every agency we could think of. Don’t believe us? Then start making the calls yourself. Everyone should be educated with this topic, the effects can be devastating. Again, please feel free to contact us for more information (you may private message us or e-mail us at ).

So, if an employee has had to resign because of getting sick from the building and provided results from a mold test taken of the school. why hasn’t the school board done anything yet? If they alone have the authority than they need to get on it.

Flood the school board office with letters, email and phone calls.

We should also boycott and refuse to send our children into that school. That would get their attention. We would need total cooperation from parents. It would only work if all the students were kept home. I am looking into and planning to cyber school my child next year for 6th grade. And maybe beyond that. I am very concerned that nothing has been done to fix the building from the first complaints in 2003 and now again in 2010. We are we waiting for?

To further expand this effort. Maybe get all the kids to wear dust masks and have WGAL show up and film the scene of the kids going into the school. Getting video like that on TV sure goes a long way on other cases.

You pay taxes and your child has the right to attend the public schools. So, if you feel that there are any issues with the schools you are your child’s voice. Talk to your child, question your child, believe what your child tells you and investigate. Do not assume that someone is making sure the school is a safe and healthy environment.

Adults do not believe that anyone in the school district would harm their child. In addition, children do not report the obvious to their parents, as children do not believe the adults in school would do anything to harm them. For instance, children perhaps see buckets in the schools collecting water as it leaks through the roof. The kids do not understand that this should not be happening. So, the kids do not report these occurrences to mom or dad. Nosebleeds, coughing, respiratory ailments, digestive problems, headaches and/or fatigue may occur for your child on a regular basis throughout the school year and therefore, your children do not report it to you. It is essential for all parents to start asking the obvious and keep track of occurrences.

Boycotting? Although it is an excellent idea, you will never get a majority of parents to keep their children home. As we stated above, most people believe that no one would intentionally put a child in harm’s way. Again, until the proper testing is conducted in the schools, you will hear that the schools are fine.

Cyber schooling is an excellent alternative. We highly recommend this form of schooling. You must have a motivated child and be willing as a parent, to work with your child. The feeling of knowing that your child is learning in a safe environment is priceless.

Dust mask? To make a statement, perhaps this would get someones attention, but for protection a hazmat suit is necessary. You must remember that toxins enter your body through inhalation, ingestion and through contact with your skin. Typical dust masks for painting, sanding, etc. are useless, as toxic particles are much smaller than the weave in the average dust mask.

Contacting the media? Again, great idea but you need lots of participation. We do not mean to sound so negative about the ideas, but we have been there, done that. Seven years ago, the television and newspapers covered the story and meetings were held throughout the district, but administration downplayed the situation and stated that it was just a handful of kids and parents voicing concerns, even though throughout the entire school district there were sick people.  We believe that everyone with a sick child must stand up for their child in order for the school district to take notice. In addition, sick teachers must also report their concerns.

If you are concerned about your health or your child’s health due to exposures please contact us by private message or at . Our doctor has volunteered her time to come to our school district and administer a simple test to determine if you have been exposed to toxigenic material. If 100 people contact us our doctor will administer the test free of charge.

Exposures to toxins should not be taken lightly. They can be life altering and can last a lifetime. We know administrators and board members read this blog. As we have said repeatedly, we are here to help the community. We also thought like many of you, that this is not real. Unfortunately, it is real - it is very real.

From the EPA on Sick Building Syndrome

http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/sbs.html

There are many additional symptoms (beyond the short-list given in the EPA report) associated with SBS and it can affect many body organs.

Heard after school yesterday there were men on the roof of SEMS West armed with caulk guns and accessories searching for holes in the roof to repair!

Heard there is going to be an announcement of some sort regarding this topic at tomorrow night’s buildings and grounds meeting.  Should be interesting.  Can’t wait to hear the news.  Hope they have finally decided to do the right thing and get information to the public.
