For years I’ve been approached by ladies who used to belong to what was once known as the Stewartstown VFW Ladies Auxilliary. These same ladies have mentioned to me over the years that they wished there was a Stewartstown VFW Ladies Auxilliary again as they would join it.

If anyone feels there is a need to restart a Ladies Auxilliary at the Stewartstown VFW, please send me a private message.

Thank you.  smile

Only if you could identify needs in the community that are not being met and you think they could be addressed by the group.

Back when there was a Ladies auxilliary no one wanted to hold an office and the same people had to hold their office for years. Also the same six or seven ladies was the only ones who attended the meetings, myself being one of them. Letters where sent out that we needed active members yet no one came forward. It would be a great idea to have one if everyone who has questioned you would come forward and participate.

What does the auxilliary actually do?  I don’t understand their purpose.  Sorry..... I’m not being a smarty pants, just truly don’t understand what they do.

They’re like a men’s Rotary Club.  They do fundraisers then at the end of the year they decide what community organizations to donate to.  Unfortunately they split each other’s profits and everyone ends up with less.  Also the same old organizations in the community end up with the money anyway and new efforts or project really are not understood or even known about so it all sort of goes back to who you know.  It is not a bad idea it is just that after running a nonprofit myself, I never found any of these groups helpful as they seem to have the same commitments year after year.  Moreover they are all getting in less money so there is less of a pie going around anyway.

Thank you very much for your answer!  I appreciate it!  But I guess I was just thinking - how do I find out what new projects/efforts/etc. are being proposed in the community?  I know there’s an effort to do something with the Stewartstown railroad, but that’s all I am aware of .... does anyone know if there are any other projects proposed/underway that need assistance?

How you personally find out sort of depends on how much you pay attention and that is different for everyone.  As far as these Rotary and Auxillary type groups, believe me, they get contacted for all the good it does.  wink It is just that it seems, the fire companies, senior center, libraries, parks, etc. always end up with the money.  There is nothing wrong with that Per Se, all are important organizations to the community.  It is just that those organizations will always get money; never enough - but chances are pretty good they will always have money on the books to operate.  That is not true with every nonprofit and that is when they have to fold.

I sort of compare it to high school athletics - especially football and M&W;’s basket.  Non profits have to be embraced by the community and be known about and supported by the community otherwise it will not work.

The VFW Ladies Auxilliary as I understand it, used to hold fund raisers. They are a support group for our military serving now in Iraq and Afghanistan. They send packages to our military overseas. Example: Stewartstown American Legion has posters on bulletin board or nearby bulletin board with a list of suppllies our military are in need of or would like shavers, shaving cream, etc.

I hope I’ve answered your question.  smile

Fawn Grove Borough is soliciting donations to restore the old clock that used to be at the square in Fawn Grove where M & T Bank is situated.  smile
