I read in the paper that trick or treating is Saturday for Hopewell and Stewartstown, but this site says it is SUnday.  Can anyone clarify?

Why is it moved from the traditional day?

the mayor gets to declare when it’ll be. the council went along with his recommendation. i suppose he didn’t want the traditional day because it’s a sunday...but you’ll have to ask him.

Why is it moved from the traditional day?

The following article which appeared in Saturday’s YDR might be the reason why.

Halloween On Sunday A Caldron Of Controversy
Some disagree with trick-or-treating on the Lord’s day. For tohers, the 31st is a must.
By Kristen Wyatt
Associated Press

NEWMAN, Ga.—Across the Bible Belt this Halloween, some little ghosts and goblins might be shooed away by the neighbors—and some youngsters will not be allowed to go trick or treating at all—because the holiday falls on a Sunday this year.

“It’s a day for the good Lord, not for the devil, said Barbara Braswell, who plans to send her 4-year-old grandaughter Maliyah out trick-or-treating in a princess costume on Saturday instead.

Some towns around the country are decreeing that Halloween be celebrated on Saturaday to avoid complaints from those who might be offended by the sight of demons and witches ringing their doorbell on the Sabbath. Others insist the holiday should be celebrated on October 31 no matter what.

“Moving it, that’s like celebrating Christmas a week early,” said Veronica Wright, who bought a Power Rangers costume for her son in Newman. “It’s just a kid thing. It’s not for real.”

It is an especially sensitive issue for authorities in the Bible Belt across the South.

“You just don’t do it on Sunday,” said Sandra Hulsey of Greenville, Ga. “That’s Christ’s day. You go to church on Sunday, you don’t go out and celebrate the evil. That’ll confuse a child.”

In Newman, a suburb south of Atlanta, the City Council decided to go ahead with trick-or-treating on Sunaday. In 1999, the last time October 31 fell on a Sunday, the city moved up trick-or-treating to Saturday, which brought howls of protest.

“We don’t need to confuse people with this,” Councilman George Alexander said.

In Vestavia Hills, Alabama, a suburb of Birmingham, a furor erupts every time Halloween falls on Sunday. Local officials decided not to take a stand this time.

“About 15 years ago, we decided to have Halloween on Saturday instead. People went crazy. We said, ‘Never again.’” recalled Starr Burbic, longtime secretary to the mayor. “It messed everybody up to move Halloween. Some people don’t like having it on a Sunday, but we just couldn’t find a way to make everyone happy.”

The patchwork of trick-or-treat zones could work to children’s advantage: Some might go out on both nights to get all the treats they can.

That makes sense, hopefully everyone gets the word that its Saturday. Since I’ve witnessed a lot of kids are usually shipped into Stewartstown Station to Trick or Treat from other area’s. Hopefully we won’t have a Double Header of Tricks and Treats.

That’s a good question...how will everyone find out if it’s not word of mouth?  I wouldn’t have known if it weren’t for this site.  It’s gonna be a shock to kids who may have plans elsewhere on Saturday night to come home only to find that they missed trick-or-treating!

Most likely an announcement will be made in school. In the past it seems all municipalities in the southern end usually celebrate Halloween the same night. There has been an exception to this but not often. The change has also been announced in local newspapers.

Not much anyone can do about the kids that have plans for Saturday night. I guess they will just have to wait until next year.

Saubel’s is sponsoring a Trick or Treat Night at their Stewartstown store October 29th from 4PM-8PM. There will be treats for all children 12 and under. Prizes will be awarded for the funniest and cutest costumes.

Refreshments will be provided by Boy Scouts Pack 151. They will also be accepting donations of canned goods for the Food Bank.

This is my first post. I came here to find out if the rumor was true… and am disapointed to find out it is.  It figures. I work a 24 hour shift, which is today, the 30th. My wife is also working 3-11 today. I was hopin to take my kids trick or treating ON THE HOLIDAY.... NOT the day before. This is just plain rediculous.

Well geesh, since we can CHANGE holidays, I also happen to be scheduled to work Christmas this year.... Do you think we can change the day we celebrate that also?

And if that’s the case, then maybe we should think about changing Easter also.. you know it is mostly supported by a ficticious character, the easter bunny… and you know the whole false idols before me thing, especially on a Sunday… wow, I’m just waiting for the lightning to strike me down as we speak.... Maybe we should just stop all the holidays, so we don’t offend someone… just in case ya know.

Personally, I’m glad it wasn’t on a school night.  We don’t live in the bible-belt, but it appears we live in the bible-bra.

I also heard another reason for this. Because of the time change tonight, someone’s thinking was that the kids would be out later (eventhoguh the clock would say 6-8p - it would feel like 7-9p for the kids) and the time change may make it difficult for kids to get into their evening routine. Sounds like a load to me.

It could be worse:

School Board Cancels Halloween
Thursday, October 28, 2004

Washington School Board Cancels Halloween
A new rule means no school for 20,000 little ghosts and goblins in Puyallup (search), Wash.

School officials there have designated “no Halloween (search), costume-free zones” to stop kids from coming to school in costume. They say ugly witch costumes, with their pointy hats and crooked noses, are insensitive to real-life practicing Wiccans.

“We work really hard to teach our students to be respectful of traditions and cultures that are held by people other than themselves. The Wiccan religion is one of those religions,” said school district spokesperson Karen Hanson.

Wicca (search), an ancient pagan belief rooted in worshipping nature, is recognized by the federal government as a religion and followers openly practice witchcraft, complete with magic potions.

However, there are no exact numbers on how many people out there are casting spells—some say maybe 100,000 nationwide. FOX News was unable to track down a Wiccan in Puyallup.

But there were plenty of wicked angry parents at this week’s school board meeting in the city. Parents took turns saying that this cultural celebration that has been around for centuries, and should not be taken away from the children.

I hope you were able to find someone who was willing to take your children trick or treating tonight.

I don’t think anyone will turn your children away if you take them out Sunday, as long as you take them around outside the borough lines. I know when Halloween falls on a long weekend I welcome trick or treaters every night.

You mentioned you are off Sunday, a good place to take your kids would be to York City to see the Halloween Parade. Candy is distributed to the kids who attend. It begins at York Expo Center. The parade is supposed to start at 2PM. Be prepared for a long day as the parade lasts a couple of hours. Adults enjoy the parade too.

Well geesh, since we can CHANGE holidays, I also happen to be scheduled to work Christmas this year.... Do you think we can change the day we celebrate that also?

There have been many people trying to do just that-- stop all the holidays because they find them offensive. mad

I have heard the catholic churches have had to change their religious holidays because if a holiday fell during the week church attendance would be poor.

I wish to extend a thank you to all the fire police who volunteered their time to ensure the safety of all trick or treaters throughout the borough. They did a great job.

They could have thought of themselves and stayed home and kept warm on such a nasty night but instead came out to make sure everything ran smoothly.

A big thank you to the Borough Council for putting on such a great haunted display at the borough building.

Happy Halloween Everyone!
