What is the difference between my trash can and a Penn Waste trash can? $9 a quarter! Same brand, same model, same exact can. Way to help save the environment, replace my almost new trash can with a Penn Waste can. The Borough said that Penn’s bid was so low that we may even get a reduction in our trash bill. I will believe it when I see it and if it is not $9 a quarter, it is not a savings. Got to love the Stewartstown Borough Council - GREAT JOB!
I am not sure what services you had prior compared to what services you have now but I can tell you that when East Hopewell did this, my cost went down and my service went up. I now get a bulk item pick up each week plus recycling. Neither of these services were offered previously. My cost went down about $7 per quarter as a result.
They provided me with a free trash can and recycling bins. I am allowed to put out additional trash (other cans, boxes, etc) as long as it does not exceed some number of containers (the amount escapes me at the moment). Suffice it to say, it has not been an issue.
They seem to be pretty flexible too. Some weeks I have nothing to put out. Sometimes when doing heavy clean out of the house, I know I have exceeded my allotment and they don’t charge me. Pretty much seems that as long as you don’t abuse it, they look the other way.

We’ve had bulk pickup (1 item ea week) and recycling. I’ll just continue to put my bags at the end of my driveway like I’ve done for over a decade and they’ll just continue to take them, like they have for over a decade.

My neighbor has the same complaint. She went out and bought a good sturdy trash can that Penn waste wont empty. Bring your gripe to the attention of the borough council, not the office. BTW, our bills are not going to be lowered. Right now Penn Waste may be able to lower the cost but the landfill is raising their rate so it will probably offset it. How do I know this? I attend council meetings.
I’m confused, are we being required to put out specific trashcans in the Borough? I assumed this might happen eventually so the collectors can use the lift that fits those cans. Trash contracts are always so much fun as I recall....not :(

If so, I’ll buy one set if needed. After they leave them out in the street and they get plowed over by a car, I won’t be replacing them. That’s why we stopped putting cans out 10 years ago. They don’t have a very good record of getting the cans back into yards.
I’m with Alex...Penn Waste has done an excellent job for us out in East Hopewell.
Believe they ask you to use their own cans because of the equipment they use. One guy does the driving and the emptying...the trucks have arms that pick up the cntrs and dump them, thereby cutting down on labor and I would imagine workman’s comp, as the employee no longer has to muscle a 50 lb can into the truck.
These are people who bought the nice, large loader kind that the trucks can just pick up and dump. Apparently our former trash hauler dumped them without problems. Penn Waste will only use the dumping kind of their own, not one residents have bought. There has been no issue with regular size trash cans that I have experienced or heard about.

I didn’t have to buy anything...York Waste dropped off the loader type...the newsletter mentioned to call them and they would deliver one...are we not allowed to use them and have to use PW’s? I also saw where the rate would go down a $1 a quarter...basically PW under bid YW by a dollar a quarter
Our $68 became $77 if this is true, someone who did the contract didn’t do their homework. Now I’ll have a York Waste Bin, which I’ll keep, because no doubt we will be switching again.

I am pretty sure at the meeting they said that we didn’t have to get the “special” can, but if we did it would be an extra $9/per month.

I’d be interested in how many people opt in for that special little feature.
The calendar thing we just got from PW states Basic service is 4-32 gallon bags or containers per collection. Don’t believe the big cans will be or should be mandatory. We are actually going for the low volume option this time...with recycling we basically put out a can every two weeks anyway(one kitchen bag a week).

Is that Borough or Township? Do we have a volume choice now? Because it used to be 6 bags per collection. We never have that, except for maybe the pick-up after Christmas. Otherwise, it’s typically a bag or two, plus recycling.
