Our new council gets sworn in Tuesday night.  I hope more people attend meetings this year.  Just being there and voicing your questions, concerns and opinions, can have an affect on the decisions being made.

I was stuck in the Maryland parking lot yesterday so I couldn’t make it.

I heard this from a township police north of here saying that the police were fired or contracts were not renewed.

Does anyone know anything about this.  Am I spreading rumors?

Thanks to all who have information

Police employee contracts that were voted in at the last council meeting in December were voided by the new council.  This action happened at the end of the meeting after an executive session.  Council offered no explanation after being questioned by the public and the meeting was quickly adjourned.

They did what they wanted, no explanation required I suppose.  I bet 50% or the new folks don’t last a year, they already got what they wanted smile

Right, I wouldn’t be surprised if they passively quit. Meaning, they don’t “actually” step down, which would lead to their replacement. But they just don’t show/care/do anything, since they got what they came for.

And now mayhem can ensue.  I certainly hope that all of the board members addresses are published somewhere. I’m sure that the hoodlums will want to thank you and your property personally.

yeah, no explanation required....I though the council was supposed to be accountable for their actions?  I don’t need to know specifics of the contract (personal information) Did they not think our officers were doing their jobs?  Were they insubordinate? Did they wreck a police vehicle?  Were they habitually late?  Fail a random drug screening?  Is the contract not to their liking and they just want to make changes and revisit?  Is WHY really that difficult a question to answer??

I hope for the sake of the people that are serviced by the Stewartstown Police that this is not true. Think about the repercussions of this action: there will be no police coverage for the School District, no security for the Fire and EMS department as there are certain places where they are needed to make sure the crews are safe. Nobody to keep Stewartstown safe. Granted the PSP are around but they are spread thin enough as it is and to get them to come quick is a pipe dream. I know it will fall on deaf ears but PLEASE THINK ABOUT THIS BEFORE YOU MAKE A MISTAKE THAT COULD LEAVE SOMEONE YOU LOVE OR CARE ABOUT LOOKING FOR THE POLICE THAT MIGHT NOT SHOW UP IN TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While I don’t wish anyone harm or hurt, IF there is someone that will be affected negatively by this action, (and there will be many) I hope it’s every one of the council members that participated in this.

Thank you Council, for clearly reinforcing mine and everyone else’s original assumption that you were only here for your own agenda. You didn’t even let your seat get warm. Had you been in it for the good of the community, it wouldn’t have been done sneaky with no explanation, and would’ve been done in a manner that a BACK-UP plan was in place, and everyone was aware of it BEFORE you acted like a bunch of high school kids. Looks like the Council is just a bunch of “Mean Girls”.

Remember, Karma’s a bitch.

As usual, everyone is reacting without knowing the facts. The new contract for the police approved in December giving them a pay raise was overturned by the new council until the budget can be evaluated. No one was fired; and the police haven’t been disbanded. They will still do business as usual. And since this involved boro employees and their pay, it cannot be discussed with the public.
I wasn’t sure what this meant either…until I asked a council member to clarify it.

So why didn’t they clarify when asked at the public meeting to avoid this reaction?

I can’t answer that question, only the council knows why. Next time I talk to a council member, I’ll ask.

Since they were stopping a pay increase it needed to be asap to make sure the raise didn’t make it in the paychecks(I assume bi monthly payroll) next week.

Regardless of the need for necessity, when asked about it, they should have provided the same non-identifying clarification that you did. To ignore everyone’s requests for info and walk away, after a seemingly sneaky, last-minute move, only provided the platform for everyone to assume.  If they didn’t want that, they should’ve handled the matter differently.

Given the nitpicking that went around some of their elections, you’d think they’d want to do everything to NOT promote bad feelings/misconceptions.  People are willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, but most are not willing to give you a dozen benefits. So you have to take advantage of them when you can.

So, they made a gaffe.  Not surprising or unexpected for a politician. But doing it right out of the gate certainly doesn’t leave a sweet taste in residents mouths going forward.

The same answer could have been given to the public after executive council.  Love the transparency smile Welcome to the forums Maxx, although I’m guessing you are one of the new councilmembers smile
