Police Coverage

Police coverage in this area is handled by either the PA State Police or Stewartstown Borough Police. It depends on where you live.

If you live in Stewartstown Borough, Cross Roads Borough or Winterstown Borough, primary coverage comes from the Stewartstown Borough Police Department. When they are not on duty, coverage is provided by the PA State Police out of Loganville. SPD also covers all the schools in South Eastern School District.

If you live in East Hopewell or Hopewell Township, coverage is provided exclusively by the PA State Police.

In rare cases, the PA State Police might request backup coverage from Stewartstown Police Department, York Regional (they cover North Hopewell Township) or Southern Regional (they cover Shrewsbury/New Freedom). Stewartstown Police also provide mutual aid coverage to these area departments when the need arises.

Police coverage is the responsibility of your local municipal government. If you want to have to coverage changed, you will have to lobby your elected representatives for that change.

Typically the PA State Police have 2 officers on duty at night in the York area. They cover pretty much the entire county. They are staffed 100% according to their barracks commander. Problem is their maximum staffing allowance is too low. State budgets affect this tremendously.

Stewartstown Police currently have five officers. One officer is partly paid for by grants as a school resource officer and thus spends most of his time working in the schools.
