I recently flew to Missoula, Montana for my daughter’s graduation from photography school and drove back to Southern York County with her. On the way home we visited at a few places of interest, like Devil’s Tower in Wyoming, the Black Hills, and my favorite, the Badlands in South Dakota.

It’s been about a month since I began working on updating the Southern York County Life web site. I thought some of you might be interested in what is driving this makeover, and a few of the more technically inclined might enjoy stepping through what this has involved so far (besides long evenings and short nights!).

Many people, including residents of Southern York County--at least us “older” ones--can remember Flip Wilson, a seventies comedian who was at times hilarious. One of his routines was his rendition of Geraldine, who would explain her indulgences--say an expensive shopping spree--by saying “The devil made me do it.” It was a very funny routine, but of course she was not a real person, and not to be taken seriously.

Several months ago the issue of teaching intelligent design along with evolution (neo-Darwinism, the dominant theory of evolution taught today) came to the forefront when the Dover Board of Education decided to implement that change in their curriculum. Probably all of us in Southern York County have read articles and editorials about it or have heard it on the news.

I’m sometimes asked about this and figure that with the launch of the updated site this is a good time to share a little history. Stewartstown.com began as an idea in the fall of 1999. There were several factors that played into the decision to start it.
