The Stewartstown Police Department is providing 500 free firearm safety kits to local residents through a partnership with Project Childsafe, the nationwide firearms safety education program. The safety kits, which include a gun lock, are being distributed starting November 12, 2003 between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm at the Stewartstown Police Department. After that time contact an officer to obtain a safety kit.
The memory of Dorothy Davis was evoked recently by the presentation of an award to Stewartstown-area resident Mary Sue Shaw at Stewartstown’s Mason-Dixon Library. Dorothy Davis served as librarian there for over 30 years and was renowned for fostering a spirit of volunteerism and community service among the patrons and residents. Upon her death in 1992, the Friends of the Library created the Dorothy Davis Award that is given intermittently to honor outstanding individuals from the Stewartstown area who make significant contributions to the community.
Yvonne Koyzis, bride of Stewartstown Borough councilman, Guy Hook, has come to Stewartstown to bring a little culture to the area. She is a teacher of song. Having graduated from Northwestern University with a Masters Degree in Music, she sang with the Chicago Symphony Chorus for 13 years. During that time, she recorded and traveled with the Chicago Symphony, sang on Grammy-winning albums and performed at the Berlin Philharmonic and Carnegie Hall. Ten years ago she established The Singing School in the suburbs of Chicago in order to help others to experience the joy of being able to sing.
Southern Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland prepare for the 15th Annual Community All Saints’ Day Service. The 15th annual Community All Saints’ Day Service will be held on Friday, November 1, 2002 at 7:30 pm at Grace United Methodist Church, 473 Plank Road in Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania. Nearly 30 clergy and lay persons representing the churches of southern and southeastern York and northern Baltimore and Harford Counties will participate in this special interfaith service which revisits the ancient Christian holy day following All Hallows Eve and memorializes area individuals who have died during the last year.

Movers and shakers of the Stewartstown Lions Club gathered at D&D Scarborough’s conference room last week to organize activities for the coming club year which begins on July 1. The club has 24 dinner meetings per year, two per month, usually rotating between five area churches where various church groups prepare and serve the family-style meals.
Jennifer Uhden, of Stewartstown Station, was the latest recipient of a $50 U.S. Savings Bond and a certificate naming her Kennard-Dale High School’s Senior of the Month. Jennifer is listed in Who’s Who Among American High School Students, and is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. She intends to attend Penn State University, majoring in psychology.
Roger B. Wilson played to a full house at a recent program about antique tools that was sponsored by the Stewartstown Historical Society. That he was a former teacher was evidenced by the way he kept letting his audience participate in the subject, both from asking them questions and from passing around items ranging from beaver skulls to tree nails. The impressive display of old tools that he used to demonstrate his talk will be on display at the Historical Society building for the next couple of months. The building is open to the public every Sunday from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00.
The March 27 program of the Stewartstown Historical Society will look at tools used in the building of log cabins and barns before the days of the circular saw and the quarter-inch drill. Roger Wilson of New Park, a long time collector of old tools, will show some of his collection and discuss their use. Roger is a retired teacher, having spent twenty years teaching in the South Eastern School District and seven years teaching at Millersville University.
Stewartstown’s Eureka Fire Hall was the gathering spot for 151 Lions and Lionesses from New Freedom, Jacobus, Dallastown, York Township and, of course, Stewartstown when the two local clubs played host at the annual social get-together of those clubs in Lion “Zone 4-C.” Zone Chairman Lion John Parker, of the Jacobus Lions Club, served as emcee of the affair at which Lion Vice District Governor Daniel Clever was an honored guest.
Historical Society Hears Decoy Carver Lester Orsburn disproved the old saying, “If it looks like a duck, it IS a duck.” At the Society’s recent program at the Borough Building, Mr. Orsburn showed that, if it looks like a duck, it very well might be one of his decoys.
Where to start. The new design of Stewartstown.com has been a long time coming, and actually is not yet complete. There are still some things we will be doing for the next little while to get where we want to be. So...where do we stand?
As Stewartstown.com approaches its two-year anniversary, major changes are in the works. Most of these changes will become active in November. The ride may be a little bumpy, but we’ll try to keep disruptions to a minimum.
The Stewartstown Historical Society’s newest display of locally owned collections is that of historic eyeglasses. The display, aptly titled, A Time-Line of Vision, shows the development of spectacles from the 1500’s through modern times. |
