Antique tools program huge success

Roger B. Wilson played to a full house at a recent program about antique tools that was sponsored by the Stewartstown Historical Society. That he was a former teacher was evidenced by the way he kept letting his audience participate in the subject, both from asking them questions and from passing around items ranging from beaver skulls to tree nails. The impressive display of old tools that he used to demonstrate his talk will be on display at the Historical Society building for the next couple of months. The building is open to the public every Sunday from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00.

Mary Sue Shaw, the Society’s president, opened the meeting with a reminder of the April 20 bus trip to Historic London Town and Annapolis. She also asked for donation of items for the Society’s yard sale that will be held on May 18 and reminded members of the upcoming functions in August and September. On Friday, August 23, the Society will participate in Heritage Days by sponsoring a grand ball at Naylor’s Wine Cellars. Attendees will be encouraged to dress in the period costumes that became familiar during last year’s sesquicentennial celebration. The Society building will be open that Saturday to accommodate visitors to the Senior Center and borough Heritage Days functions.

The Society officers are already looking forward to September’s program, when Dr. Alan Irvine, a professional storyteller and historian, will bring history to life in telling about the French and Indian Wars in this area of the state. It will be free and open to the public and presented as a program of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. It will be supported in part by a grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Details will be given later in the summer.

In other Society doings, Attorney Don Yost, has been made a member of the Board of Directors. He joins another recent appointee, Marsha England, who was an early founder of the Society who recently returned to active membership on the Board. Membership Chairman Fran Allison reminds members that their 2002 dues are now being solicited, and non-members that she can be contacted at (717) 993-6872 for information about joining.

Director Jane Thomas, who serves as the Society’s Display Chairman, is looking for items of a patriotic nature that can be used for a display during the Fourth of July holiday period. If you have any such items, early flags, Uncle Sam statues or signs, plates and glasses with a patriotic theme, or similar minutia, please consider lending them to the Society for a few weeks this summer. Contact Mrs. Thomas at (717) 993-0781.
