Lions honor Jennifer Uhdren; hear Scarborough

Jennifer Uhden, of Stewartstown Station, was the latest recipient of a $50 U.S. Savings Bond and a certificate naming her Kennard-Dale High School’s Senior of the Month. Jennifer is listed in Who’s Who Among American High School Students, and is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. She intends to attend Penn State University, majoring in psychology.

Following the presentation at the Stewartstown Lions Club meeting, the attending Lions discovered that one of their number has been collecting letter openers for the past 13 years. Lion Don Scarborough has amassed over 450 of the knife-like utensils from all over the world. He displayed about forty of them at the meeting and told about the origins of many of them. He has collected them in such far-flung locations as New Zealand, Tahiti, Canada, and the Dominican Republic. The hobby began as a way to collect souvenirs of places his family visited, and Don particularly values those that indicate their place of origin by their shape or lettering. He also enjoys those that serve duel purposes, such as those having a cigarette lighter, a clock, or a magnifying glass in their handle.

The collection is displayed at Don’s Stewartstown office, so his wife continually complains about his opening mail at home with an index finger. His honorarium for giving the talk to his fellow Lions was—what else?—a letter opener with a handle in the shape of a lion.
