Pictorial history of Stewartstown published

Its title page states, “Published in honor of (Stewartstown’s) sesquicentennial, 1851-2001,” and the Stewartstown Historical Society’s new pictorial history, Stewartstown, Then and Now, is a worthy tribute to that event. It contains 197 photographs of people, places, and things that were important in the borough’s growth over the years.

As the title indicates, many of the pictures, show what a building looked like in its early days and again what it looks like today. A partial list of contents includes chapters on Church History, Business Interests, The Stewartstown Railroad, The History of Fire Protection, The War Years, and the Stewartstown Furniture Factory. The extensive text that gives meaning to the photos was composed by society director and local historian, Joe Hall. Kathryn Jordan performed the editing and data entry, while Douglas R. Winemiller provided technical support for the project.

The hardcover book sells for $19.95. A limited quantity was printed, and the book is sure to become a collector’s item. A copy may be reserved by calling Joe Hall (993-6233) or Kathryn Jordan (993-2104). One may also reserve a copy by calling the Stewartstown Historical Society (993-5003) and leaving a message on the tape if no one is present to answer the telephone. The books will be available for purchase at the Society headquarters at 6 North Main Street beginning on Sunday, July 22.
